OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Network Administrator to support the Transportation Operations Center in Northern Virginia. This role is ideal for a mid-level networking professional with strong hands-on experience who is looking for long-term professional growth while supporting critical network infrastructure. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively to install, maintain, secure, and optimize enterprise network environments while contributing to infrastructure improvements and cybersecurity initiatives.

Job DescriptionVDOT is seeking a Network Administrator with extensive networking experience to install, configure, maintain, monitor, and support enterprise LAN, WAN, and network infrastructure environments. This position supports the Transportation Operations Center by ensuring network availability, responding to operational issues, implementing infrastructure enhancements, and maintaining secure, reliable network operations. The role requires strong technical expertise, sound troubleshooting skills, effective communication, and the ability to contribute both independently and as part of a collaborative infrastructure team.

ResponsibilitiesTechnical Duties• Install, configure, maintain, and support LAN, WAN, and enterprise network infrastructure.

  • Configure and support Cisco routing and switching environments.
  • Design and implement network extensions and campus network connectivity.
  • Install, test, configure, and maintain network hardware and software.
  • Perform network monitoring to identify faults, performance issues, and traffic anomalies.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve connectivity issues affecting users and network resources.
  • Support routing, subnetting, VLAN configuration, and network integration activities.
  • Perform network tuning and capacity planning to optimize infrastructure performance.
  • Assess existing network environments and recommend technical improvements based on business requirements and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Support infrastructure design efforts and assist with deployment of new and replacement network equipment.

Operational Support• Respond to Tier 1 and Tier 2 network and software support requests.

  • Resolve break/fix incidents involving network infrastructure and communications systems.
  • Support field maintenance teams with communications implementation and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain accurate inventory, maintenance, and asset documentation.
  • Maintain detailed records of network changes and configuration updates.
  • Prepare utilization and availability statistics to support operational planning.

Cybersecurity & Infrastructure• Support implementation of network security measures and infrastructure protections.

  • Participate in cybersecurity improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with threat hunting and mitigation efforts.
  • Help maintain secure network configurations aligned with organizational standards.

Collaboration & Documentation• Communicate effectively with technical teams and end users with varying levels of technical expertise.

  • Collaborate on infrastructure projects and provide technical guidance when appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain project documentation and network architecture documentation.
  • Assist with user training and knowledge transfer related to supported technologies.
  • Effectively manage workload priorities while balancing multiple assignments.

Minimum Qualifications• 10 years of general Information Technology experience.

  • 5 years of Cisco routing and switching experience.
  • 5 years of VLAN management experience.
  • 5 years of subnetting experience.
  • 3 years of experience with routing protocols including BGP, OSPF, or similar technologies.
  • 2 years of network design experience.
  • 2 years of integration troubleshooting experience.
  • Physically reside within the United States for the duration of the assignment.
  • Participate in both a phone and in-person interview.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship, now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications• Bachelor's degree or industry networking certifications.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to mentor or guide team members.
  • 2 years of network security experience.
  • 2 years of cybersecurity experience.
  • 2 years of DNS and DHCP administration.
  • 2 years of network monitoring experience.
  • 2 years of network cable management experience.
  • 2 years of Cisco FMC/Firepower experience.
  • 3 years of solutions design and build experience.
  • 2 years of software integration experience.
  • Experience supporting enterprise infrastructure and transportation or public sector environments.

CompensationThis is a 1099 Contract position.

Pay Rate: $51 – $71 per hour
