Full description
Overview
Certara is a growing company that provides a dynamic and exciting place to work. Our purpose is to assist in accelerating the development of meaningful medicines that make an impact on our society and the people that need them most. Innovation and creativity are highly valued, and everyone is given the opportunity for training and continuous development. Our portfolio spans the discovery, preclinical, clinical and post-marketing phases of drug development, working with 1,200 commercial companies, 250 academic institutions, and numerous regulatory agencies.
Chemaxon, a Certara company is looking for a Solution Architect to design and deliver software solutions and business-tier support for our customers in Japan and the wider APAC region. Chemaxon’s chemistry and cheminformatics software is used daily by researchers in pharma and biotech, and the Solution Architect is the person who turns what those customers need into an architecture we can build, deploy, and support.
You will act as a key technical resource, bridging business needs with Chemaxon’s technology offerings. That means owning solutions from ideation to production: installation, integration, migration, custom development and consulting, and supporting commercial teams at the early sales stage with advisory and requirements documents. You will work directly with Japanese customers in their own language and translate that context back to product and engineering colleagues in English.
This role is based in Japan and works Japanese business hours, with travel to customer sites and a daily overlap window with Chemaxon HQ in Budapest, Hungary.
Responsibilities
Solution design and delivery
- Solution scoping: Scope, design and describe solutions that address customer business needs, from ideation through to production.
- Architecture ownership: Lead integration and deployment work — installation, integration, migration, custom development and consulting engagements.
- Technical documentation: Produce architecture documentation, requirements documents and statements of work that development and delivery teams can execute against.
- Take care of the technical side of engagements, anticipate risk and keep solutions scalable, flexible and resilient.
Customer support and commercial engagement
- Commercial support: Support commercial engagements alongside Sales and business development by designing solution architectures and advising on feasibility.
- Japanese customer ownership: Act as the technical point of contact for Japanese-speaking customers, issue resolution, discovery sessions and design reviews in Japanese.
- Market context: Feed regional requirements (local infrastructure, procurement and validation practices) into how solutions are designed and proposed.
Product knowledge and enablement
- Product mastery: Master how Chemaxon products are best used by customers, by collaborating with product teams, industry experts and customers.
- Feedback contribution: Bring field and customer insight back to product teams to inform priorities.
- Cross-team collaboration: Work with engineering, product, support, and account teams to align solutions with the product direction.
Qualifications
Essential
- Fluent Japanese (business level, written and spoken): the role works directly with Japanese-speaking customers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, for daily collaboration with colleagues outside Japan.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, chemistry, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of relevant experience, ideally in cheminformatics or drug discovery.
- Programming and scripting experience (Python, Java, or Groovy preferred).
- Familiarity with databases (Oracle, MySQL), SQL, data integration, and cloud environments.
- Understanding of system architecture and documentation best practices (discovery, requirement forming, diagramming).
- Strong communication and presentation skills across remote and on-site settings.
- Problem-solving across distributed systems, and the ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly.
- Willingness to travel for on-site client engagements.
Nice to have
- Experience in a customer-facing role.
- General knowledge of drug discovery software and processes, with a research background.
- Experience with SaaS product presentation, deployment, and support.
- Familiarity with the Japanese pharma and biotech market.
- Experience working with a distributed team across time zones.
Why Chemaxon, Why Certara?
- Work on scientific software that supports real drug discovery and research, used by customers worldwide.
- Ownership of the technical relationship with Chemaxon’s customers in Japan, not just a delivery hand-off.
- Direct collaboration with product and engineering colleagues at Chemaxon HQ.
