Data Scientist / Software Engineer – Expert

Falls Technology LLC Location: McLean, VA Clearance: Active TS/SCI with Polygraph required

Falls Technology is looking for an experienced Data Scientist / Software Engineer to join our team supporting a mission-focused analytics and application development environment in McLean, VA.

This is a hands-on technical role at the intersection of data science and software engineering. We’re looking for someone who can develop and deploy NLP and machine learning capabilities while also contributing to production-quality software and backend services.

Candidates with strong Java development experience will be given priority.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, develop, and implement data science and machine learning solutions supporting mission requirements.
  • Develop Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities using Python libraries such as spaCy, Gensim, and NLTK.
  • Develop and integrate machine learning and deep learning models using PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, or similar frameworks.
  • Build production software and backend services using Java and Spring.
  • Develop data access and persistence capabilities using Spring Data JPA.
  • Design and develop solutions integrating relational databases, including Oracle and SQL-based systems.
  • Develop and deploy capabilities within AWS environments.
  • Integrate data science models and analytics into operational applications and workflows.
  • Develop, test, troubleshoot, and optimize software running within Linux environments.
  • Work within modern software development and CI/CD environments using Git and Jenkins.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, software developers, engineers, and mission users to translate requirements into operational capabilities.
  • Support deployment and operation of applications within Apache Tomcat and related application environments.

Required Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph.
  • Significant hands-on experience in data science, software engineering, or a combination of both.
  • Strong Python development experience.
  • Experience developing NLP solutions using one or more of the following:
  • spaCy
  • Gensim
  • NLTK
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as:
  • PyTorch
  • TensorFlow
  • Keras
  • Experience developing and working with SQL-based data solutions.
  • Understanding of object-oriented programming concepts.
  • Experience working within Linux environments.
  • Experience using Git and modern source-control practices.
  • Experience developing, integrating, or deploying applications within AWS environments.

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Strong Java development experience.
  • Experience with Java Spring and Spring Data JPA.
  • Strong understanding of Java object-oriented design and development.
  • Experience with Java multithreading, concurrency, and JVM memory management.
  • Experience with Maven and/or Gradle.
  • Experience using Eclipse or similar Java development environments.
  • Experience with Jenkins and automated CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience developing against Oracle databases.
  • Experience deploying and supporting applications using Apache Tomcat.

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate for this position isn't purely a data scientist or purely a Java developer. We're looking for someone who can move between both worlds—developing NLP and machine learning capabilities in Python while understanding how those capabilities become part of a larger, production Java application.

Someone with a strong Java/Spring engineering background who has also developed meaningful NLP or machine learning capabilities would be particularly well suited for this role.
