The role
This role sits within the Data Engineering team and is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the data pipelines and infrastructure that underpin reliable, high-quality data across the organisation. The Lead Data Engineer is hands-on across the full engineering stack, from pipeline development and cloud infrastructure through to data quality and platform reliability.
The Data Engineering team owns the core data platform, ensuring data is ingested, transformed, and delivered in a way that is scalable, tested, and trusted. You'll work closely with Analytics Engineering, BI, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements, influence technical direction, and contribute to raising the engineering standard across the team.
Key responsibilities
- Build and maintain data pipelines using Python and orchestration tools such as Dagster.
- Deploy and manage data infrastructure on AWS, including the use of EKS, CDK, and Terraform.
- Own CI/CD pipelines and apply GitOps practices to data platform delivery.
- Work within cloud data warehouse environments such as Snowflake, including supporting data transformation workflows built on dbt.
- Champion data quality, testing, and reliability across the platform.
- Manage and respond to critical incidents and production data issues.
- Work cross-functionally with Analytics Engineering, BI, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into sound engineering outcomes.
- Coach and mentor less experienced engineers.
What you'll bring
- Bachelor's degree in a related field. (Preferred not essential)
- 5+ years' experience in data analytics or engineering roles.
- Strong hands-on experience building and maintaining data pipelines using Python and orchestration tools such as Dagster.
- Proven experience deploying and managing data infrastructure on AWS, including EKS, CDK, and Terraform.
- Experience owning CI/CD pipelines and applying GitOps practices to data platform delivery.
- Experience working within cloud data warehouse environments such as Snowflake, including supporting data transformation workflows built on dbt.
- Strong commitment to data quality, testing, and reliability across the platform.
- Proven ability to manage and respond to critical incidents and production data issues.
- Confident communicator who works cross-functionally to translate business requirements into sound engineering outcomes.
- Ability to coach and mentor less experienced engineers.
