Job Description

Support and enhance LabWare LIMS v8, including integrations, workflow optimization, reporting, and laboratory informatics initiatives, working closely with scientists, the LIMS Supervisor, and laboratory leadership.

In this role you will help communicate and implement enhancements to the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), which houses all of the configuration, rules, tests, and test data needed to generate lab results for the Infectious Disease sections (including Bioterrorism Response, Chemical Threats Response, and Next Generation Sequencing labs), Toxicology, and Environmental Chemistry.

You will work closely with the Section Chief Scientist, the LIMS Supervisor, and all laboratory personnel involved in specimen testing, coordinating the system changes needed to deliver results. To be successful you must be detail oriented, able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences, and able to deliver required results to the lab sections. You will be assigned to a lab section.

Principal Duties

  • Support LabWare LIMS v8 and API integrations
  • Provide HL7 integration architecture, development, enhancement, testing, and support
  • Maintain working knowledge of LIMS, specifically LabWare v8
  • Work with other LIMS analysts to support communication with laboratory leadership on LIMS priorities, data security, and informatics needs
  • Program and troubleshoot system functionality and recommend solutions in a timely manner
  • Gather and document data and business requirements
  • Write user stories and test scripts, and perform user acceptance testing
  • Develop workflow documentation and flow diagrams
  • Train end users on complex software systems
  • Identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance relative to system goals
  • Weigh the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate solution

Required Qualifications

  • Business analysis experience, including requirements gathering and documentation
  • SQL and relational database experience, including work with large databases and data retrieval
  • Experience programming, implementing, and maintaining complex software systems
  • Ability to determine user needs and convert them into business and technical requirements
  • Ability to evaluate and test software functionality against a business need
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to handle multiple complex projects or tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Experience teaching end users how to use complex software systems
  • Knowledge of flow diagram software and the ability to create a workflow
  • Ability to organize and write documentation that clearly states and outlines objectives
  • Understanding of general laboratory processes, terminology, quality, and regulatory requirements
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, with strong time management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • LabWare LIMS experience, including performing queries, modifying minor coding issues, and customizing report settings with Crystal Reports
  • Experience supporting other laboratory information management systems for Infectious Disease, Toxicology, and/or Environmental Chemistry laboratories
  • Knowledge of standard health data formats (HL7, XML, CCDA, LOINC, SNOMED CT, ICD-10)
  • Public health or clinical laboratory experience
  • Environmental Chemistry knowledge: sample preparation batch vs. analysis batch; detection limits vs. reporting limits; standards vs. reagents; instrument blank vs. reagent blank vs. field blank; TNI/EPA reporting regulations
  • Infectious Disease knowledge: chain of custody; reagent batches vs. cultures; reportable results determined by an algorithm of test results; building reflex rules based on test results; CLIA/FDA/CDC reporting elements
  • Epidemiology, information technology, or informatics experience
  • A degree in Epidemiology, Laboratory Science, Computer Science, or Informatics
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Lucid for creating documents and reports
