Payroll Data Analyst
Job Summary
The Payroll Data Analyst ensures the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of payroll data by auditing payroll runs, reconciling large datasets, and generating analytical reports that support HR, Finance, and business leadership. This role serves as the bridge between payroll operations and data analytics, transforming payroll information into actionable insights that improve efficiency, reduce risk, and support compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Data Accuracy & Auditing
- Audit payroll data each cycle using variance analysis, outlier detection, tax withholding validation, and deduction reconciliation.
- Validate, clean, and reconcile payroll datasets across HRIS, timekeeping, and financial systems.
- Investigate discrepancies between payroll records and general ledger entries and resolve issues with Accounting.
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Build dashboards and reports using Excel, SQL, and BI tools.
- Identify trends, anomalies, and compliance risks and recommend corrective actions.
- Provide analytical support for audits, compliance reviews, and leadership reporting.
Compliance & Regulatory Support
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
- Validate tax codes, deductions, garnishments, and multi-state payroll rules.
- Assist with quarterly and annual payroll tax filings and year-end W-2 and 1099 processes.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, HR, Data Analytics, or related field.
- 2-5 years of payroll or HRIS data experience.
- CPP or FPC certification preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Advanced Excel including Pivot Tables and XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP.
- SQL and payroll data analysis experience.
- Power BI or Tableau experience.
- Knowledge of ADP, Workday, SAP, or similar payroll systems.
- Strong attention to detail, communication, and confidentiality.
