Full description
Level: Mid–Senior (individual contributor with mentoring responsibilities)
About the Role
We're looking for a Python-focused engineer who can independently own the design, build, and reliability of integrations, ETL processes, and data pipelines across a complex, multi-system landscape. You'll write production Python, connect systems through REST and GraphQL APIs, keep data flowing cleanly across cloud services, mentor more junior developers, and act as a technical point of contact across delivery, engineering, and product teams. Experience with clinical-trial technology is a strong plus.
Your Mission• Independently analyze, design, program, unit test, troubleshoot, and debug integrations, digital pipelines, and ETL processes in Python, with a focus on efficiency and reliability.
- Build and maintain API-based integrations (REST and GraphQL) between internal and third-party systems.
- Leverage cloud computing and microservices architecture to enable and scale integrations in cloud environments.
- Understand, troubleshoot, and manage interdependencies across multiple software systems to ensure smooth data flows and integrations.
- Monitor changes in product software and infrastructure to identify potential impacts on CIS deliverables, proactively addressing dependencies and conflicts.
- Perform code reviews of work written by other team members, with a focus on integration reliability and data integrity.
- Manage assigned tasks and follow up on items requiring clarification with the relevant teams.
- Record and track defects uncovered during test execution, and actively participate in their resolution.
- Manage multiple projects and tasks effectively, delivering on time while adapting as priorities shift.
- Mentor, supervise, and provide technical leadership to more junior developers.
- Stay current on the latest Medidata products, their functionality, and features.
- Network with key contacts inside the delivery unit and beyond your own area of expertise.
- Ensure all relevant Medidata SOPs and Work Instructions (WIs) are followed.
- Complete documentation and procedures for installation and maintenance.
Your Competencies• Strong hands-on Python development for integrations, automation, and data processing (writing, testing, debugging, and maintaining production code).
- Design and consume APIs (REST and GraphQL), handling authentication, pagination, rate limits, and error handling robustly.
- Gather business requirements, write specifications and code, and perform unit testing and debugging of applications.
- Translate business requirements into functional requirements, well-defined user stories, and clear acceptance criteria.
- Challenge inefficient or counterproductive processes and establish/deploy improved ones; strong change-management and collaboration skills.
- Work independently on projects while collaborating with others when needed to reach shared goals.
- Overcome obstacles, troubleshoot, and drive issues to resolution.
- Identify risks (technical and timeline) to deliverables and raise them for discussion and guidance with senior team members.
- Work across teams with widely varying skill sets.
- Perform in-depth, code-level debugging of your own and others' code.
- Communicate complex technical information to non-technical audiences.
- Engage confidently with clients, Project Managers, Engineering, and Product teams.
- Results-driven, data-driven, entrepreneurial, and action-oriented, with strong attention to detail.
- Occasional weekend work in support of product deployments.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent, with a minimum of 5 years of related experience.
- Strong, demonstrable proficiency in Python for integrations, ETL, and automation.
- Solid experience building and consuming REST APIs; hands-on experience with ETL processes and data pipelines.
- Excellent verbal/written communication and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with AWS.
- Experience with cloud-native monitoring and observability tools (e.g., AWS CloudWatch, Grafana) to assess system reliability.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions).
- Familiarity with relational databases such as MS SQL, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.
- Familiarity with microservices and cloud-native integration patterns.
- Familiarity with complex system migrations.
- Familiarity with software development processes.
- Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence methods and their scope of applicability.
Preferred
- Experience with GraphQL APIs.
- Experience with clinical-trial software technology.
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails or other scripting languages.
- Experience with PowerShell.
- Familiarity with mobile app development.
