The Opportunity
We're looking for an engineer who thinks in systems, leads with vision, and sees AI as a force multiplier for everything we do.
As a Principal Software Engineer for Data and Billing, you will help lead QA activities for our billing platform, where we shadow and validate over $1B in annual revenue. You'll work on streaming data testing, agentic coding workflows, and AI-driven tools that turn our billing data into revenue forecasting and strategy insights for the business.
We cover billing for one of the world's largest exchange operators, and we're scaling fast. The goal is full coverage across all billing programs, plus support for new business initiatives, monthly strategy shifts, and ongoing consulting with our development teams, Operations, Finance, Accounting, and the broader business teams.
We also want to put our billing data to work. With agentic tooling and AI on top of our shadow billing platform, we can model future revenue, forecast demand, and give the business real-time input on pricing and program strategy.
What You'll Do
- Build agents and MCPs into our test harnesses to automate bug triage and generate agentic tests, so our coverage scales without scaling headcount
- Take on customer billing program testing, validating C++ logic against massive files output from the trading system
- Close the gap on our remaining untested revenue (ports, access fees, liquidity provider programs)
- Stand up testing for our next-gen streaming stack (Java, Avro)
- Support our existing data streaming test suites, which have saved millions of dollars in losses and reputational damage
- Use our billing platform for forward-looking revenue forecasting and strategy modeling
- Automate real-time data testing via CI/CD (Jenkins)
- Eventually expand into billing/invoice testing for other Cboe products and services
If you like owning big problems, working with smart people, and watching your tests catch real money before it walks out the door, this opportunity is for you!
What You Bring:
Vision and Leadership
- A strategic, forward-thinking mindset — you don't just solve today's problems, you design systems that scale
- Strong analytical skills and an exacting attention to detail
- The ability to build consensus, communicate clearly, and lead change across cross-functional teams
AI and Automation (Critical Differentiator)
- Practical experience with tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or similar
- Familiarity with agentic AI frameworks — LangChain, AutoGen, or equivalents
- A builder's instinct: you see where AI can remove friction and you act on it
Core Engineering Skills
- Strong Python, Java, and C++ programming chops
- Solid Linux skills (you'll help deploy our AI infrastructure)
- Hands-on experience with Kafka, Avro, Kudu, Snowflake
- Data analytics, systems design
Supporting Technical Skills
- Databases: PostgreSQL (preferred), MySQL or Oracle; working SQL proficiency required
- Atlassian toolset (Jira, Confluence)
- Experience with Git-based version control
- CI/CD tooling experience, including Jenkins
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field — or equivalent experience
You'll Really Stand Out With
- Experience in financial markets with working knowledge of order entry or market data protocols
- A track record of taking a build practice from reactive to proactive and making it stick
