Design Manager (I-15 - Farmington to SLC)

The Utah Department of Transportation is seeking a highly skilled Professional Engineer to serve as Design Manager for the I-15 Farmington to Salt Lake City design-build project. In this critical leadership role, you will oversee UDOT's multidisciplinary design management and review activities, ensuring contract compliance, quality, safety, and adherence to UDOT, FHWA, and MUTCD standards. Acting as the primary liaison between UDOT, the Design-Builder, consultants, and key stakeholders, you will lead complex technical coordination and support timely project delivery.

Salary Range: $49.30 - $78.18

FT/PT Status: Full Time

Principal Duties

As the Design Manager, your duties will include:

  • Manage UDOT's design review activities during the design phase of a major design-build project.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of consultant engineers and design professionals responsible for reviewing the Design-Builder's design.
  • Oversee the review of the Design-Builder’s design to ensure compliance with the contract, UDOT standards, and other referenced requirements.
  • Set priorities, allocate resources, and manage review team workloads to meet project milestones.
  • Monitor the progress, design quality, and identify potential design issues and risks.
  • Facilitate the resolution of complex design issues between the Design-Builder, UDOT disciplines, and project stakeholders.
  • Serve as UDOT's primary design liaison to the Design-Builder and its consultants.
  • Manage procedures for design submittal reviews, comment resolutions, and UDOT acceptances.
  • Ensure review comments are documented, tracked, and resolved per project requirements.
  • Coordinate with UDOT headquarters and region staff to resolve issues and maintain consistency with department standards.
  • Provide technical leadership in evaluating proposed design changes and deviations that affect project requirements.
  • Monitor the Design Builder’s design schedule and assign review priorities to support construction activities and meet project milestones.
  • Ensure appropriate quality control and quality assurance practices are incorporated into the Design Builder’s processes.
  • Brief UDOT leadership on progress, risks, and technical issues.
  • Participate in project meetings, design reviews, workshops, and partnering forums.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in Utah.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of post-licensure professional engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a workforce and ensure fair employment practices.
  • Strong communication and supervisory skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in roadway design.
