About America's Best House Plans

America's Best House Plans is one of the nation's leading online marketplaces for residential home plans. Every day, we connect homeowners with architects and designers through a custom-built ecommerce platform that has been continuously developed and refined over many years.

We don’t just maintain a marketing website – we build software. Our team of six engineers owns the entire platform, from customer-facing features to internal tools, search, ecommerce, infrastructure, analytics, and AI initiatives. We value thoughtful engineering, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced Full-Stack PHP Developer who enjoys working across the entire technology stack.

You'll build customer-facing features, improve internal systems, help maintain our cloud infrastructure, and use AI to make both our customers and our developers more productive.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety. One week you may be optimizing SQL queries or building new ecommerce functionality. The next you might be improving deployment automation, integrating LLMs into internal workflows, or diagnosing production performance issues.

This position is best suited for engineers who enjoy improving existing systems just as much as building new ones. While we're constantly building new features and modernizing our technology, we also believe that successful software engineering is about making the right technical and business decisions. Sometimes the right answer is building something new. Sometimes it's thoughtfully enhancing a proven system. We're looking for an engineer who enjoys understanding existing software, improving it where it makes sense, and modernizing it incrementally while balancing business value, maintainability, and risk.

If you're energized by solving complex problems, taking ownership, and leaving a mature system better than you found it, you'll fit right in.

What You'll Do

  • Develop new features for our PHP-based ecommerce platform
  • Improve and modernize existing applications and services
  • Build responsive interfaces using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Design and optimize MySQL queries and database schemas
  • Improve application performance, scalability, and reliability
  • Maintain Linux servers and cloud infrastructure
  • Enhance CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
  • Monitor application health, logging, backups, and system performance
  • Help design and implement AI-powered features and internal developer tools
  • Evaluate and integrate LLM APIs, prompt engineering techniques, embeddings, and AI workflows where they provide real business value
  • Participate in architecture discussions and technical planning
  • Troubleshoot production issues across the full stack

What We're Looking For

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience
  • Can comfortably work throughout the entire stack without a framework (using vanilla php, html, css and javascript)
  • Experience building AI-powered applications
  • Experience improving developer productivity through automation and AI
  • Excellent MySQL and SQL optimization skills
  • Experience working directly on Linux servers
  • Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows
  • Solid understanding of HTTP, REST APIs, caching, sessions, authentication, and web security
  • Comfortable debugging issues across frontend, backend, database, and infrastructure
  • Enjoys owning problems from beginning to end
  • Takes pride in writing maintainable, practical code that is easy for others to read
  • Makes pragmatic engineering decisions based on business value, reliability, and long-term maintainability
  • Understands that not every problem requires a rewrite—and knows when modernization creates value versus unnecessary risk
  • Uses AI as a force multiplier—not a replacement for engineering judgment

Why Join Us?

  • Small engineering team with significant ownership and impact
  • Modernize and improve an established, successful platform
  • Work directly with decision-makers
  • Opportunity to shape our AI strategy and product direction
  • Variety of technical challenges across software development and infrastructure
  • Excellent benefits package

If you're excited about building software, improving systems, and helping shape how AI is applied in a real business, we'd love to hear from you.
