Senior Software Engineer iOS & Android - Imaging & Video

Job Description

This position is on-site in Budapest and requires EU residency and EU work visa.

General Info

We are building a computational imaging platform that recovers the physical optical properties of a scene — the illumination, the camera’s own response, and how real materials reflect and scatter light — from ordinary consumer camera capture. This is a difficult, high-impact engineering problem, and we are building the whole stack: capture, models, and the applications that run on them. The first keystone component is under provisional patent, with a broader patent family in progress.

In this role you will write the high-performance code — primarily in C/C++ — that reaches down to the lowest-level camera and imaging libraries available on iOS and Android to pull the maximum possible raw data off the device camera sensors, with the finest possible control over how those sensors capture. This is a systems-level engineering role: your work centers on performance-critical C/C++, direct low-level camera-sensor access and control, and the image and video processing that turns raw sensor data into our platform’s output.

iOS is our primary platform, and Android capability is required — the same core engine ships on both. We care more about strong C/C++ fundamentals and the ability to work at the lowest available layer of each platform’s camera stack than about any particular app-layer language: if you know C/C++ well, we are confident you can pick up Swift or Kotlin. Swift/Kotlin experience is therefore a welcome plus, not a requirement.

Tasks

Low-Level Camera & Sensor Access

  • Work at the lowest available layer of each platform’s camera stack to extract the maximum possible raw data from the device camera sensors — for example RAW / Bayer capture, uncompressed per-frame pixel buffers, depth and multi-camera streams, and full per-frame sensor metadata.
  • Take direct, fine-grained control of sensor capture — manual exposure, ISO/gain, focus, white balance, frame timing and synchronisation — using the lowest-level camera APIs and libraries each platform exposes (AVFoundation / AVCaptureDevice and the underlying capture and Core Media/Core Video interfaces on iOS; Camera2 / the NDK camera APIs on Android).
  • Push each platform to the limits of what its camera hardware and APIs allow, and find the lowest-level, most direct path to the raw sensor data the platform needs.

Core Engineering (C/C++)

  • Design and implement performance-critical C/C++ that forms the shared imaging and video engine across iOS and Android — fast, correct, and memory-efficient.
  • Implement and optimise image and video processing pipelines, including color-space handling and conversion, image/video compression, codecs, and hardware-accelerated video encoding and decoding.
  • Bridge the shared C/C++ core into each platform — Objective-C/Swift interop on iOS, and the NDK/JNI boundary on Android — with clean, well-defined interfaces.

Mobile Delivery (iOS primary, Android required)

  • Build and maintain the native iOS app (primary platform) and native Android app that expose the imaging and video engine to end users.
  • Implement the mobile-to-backend communication layer — secure, low-latency, resilient to intermittent connectivity, and suitable for transferring large imaging and video payloads.
  • Implement navigation, state management, dependency injection, persistence, offline handling, and synchronisation with backend systems within the established app architecture.
  • Contribute to real-time video streaming and networking as the product requires.

Performance, Quality & Release

  • Optimise memory usage, threading, CPU/GPU utilisation, thermal and battery behaviour, and runtime performance for demanding imaging and video workloads across a range of device capabilities.
  • Profile and tune with the appropriate native and platform tooling to eliminate stalls, hitches, and excess allocations in the capture-to-encode-to-render path.
  • Work within the release pipeline: CI/CD, code signing, beta distribution (TestFlight, Play Console internal testing), phased rollouts, and App Store / Play Store submissions.
  • Write thorough tests (unit, integration, UI) and participate actively in code review, crash triage, telemetry, and on-call response.
  • Address accessibility, localisation, and security requirements, including secure credential and data handling on-device (Keychain, Android Keystore, biometric authentication).

Code Quality & Collaboration

  • Write clean, well-documented, testable code and hold a high bar for correctness and maintainability in your own work and in code review.
  • Partner closely with backend, product, and design; translate product requirements into concrete, well-scoped implementation work with realistic estimates.
  • Share knowledge with peers on C/C++, imaging/video techniques, and native platform integration.
  • Take responsibility for the quality, correctness, and performance of the code you ship to production.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. A Master's or advanced degree is welcomed but not required.
  • Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial hands-on C/C++ development.
  • Hands-on experience with camera capture at a low level on iOS and/or Android — obtaining raw sensor data and controlling capture parameters directly, rather than only through high-level convenience APIs.
  • Demonstrated track record of shipping high-reliability consumer or business mobile applications to the App Store and/or Google Play, including post-launch maintenance and iteration.
  • Experience building mobile apps that integrate meaningfully with cloud or on-premise backend systems, including secure authentication and data-transfer protocols.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strong C/C++ programming skills — performance-critical, memory-safe, and portable across platforms.
  • Solid understanding of mobile development on iOS and Android. iOS is the primary platform and Android capability is required. Swift/Kotlin experience is a plus but not required — strong C/C++ engineers who can learn the app-layer language are encouraged to apply.
  • Low-level camera and sensor programming — comfort working at the lowest available layer of the iOS and/or Android camera stack to obtain raw sensor data and exercise direct, fine-grained control over capture.
  • Knowledge of image and video processing — color spaces, image/video compression, codecs, and hardware video encoding.
  • Understanding of real-time video streaming and networking is a plus.
  • Ability to handle confidential and pre-patent technical material with discretion, and to follow the Company's IP and data-handling policies rigorously.
  • High degree of curiosity, craftsmanship, and resilience; calm and methodical under production pressure.

Additional Preferred Experience

  • Computer-graphics and shader-programming knowledge, and GPU programming with Metal, Vulkan, or OpenGL for imaging, computer vision, or 3D rendering workloads.
  • Real-time streaming protocols and low-latency networking at scale.
  • Experience in early-stage startup or innovation-lab environments, with first-of-its-kind products.
  • Contributions to open-source graphics, codec, or mobile libraries, or a public portfolio (shipped App Store / Play Store apps, sample code) demonstrating native code quality.

Candidates must be eligible to work in Hungary, with fluent English knowledge, both written and oral.

Compensation

In accordance with Hungary’s implementation of the EU Pay Transparency Directive (Directive (EU) 2023/970):

  • Salary range: HUF 2,000,000 – HUF 2,500,000 gross per month, depending on experience and demonstrated depth.
  • Discretionary performance bonus, with details discussed with shortlisted candidates.

Compensation decisions are made on the basis of objective, gender-neutral criteria, including relevant experience, technical skills, scope of responsibility, and demonstrated performance. The Company does not request salary history during the recruitment process.

Candidates whose experience materially exceeds the scope of this role may be considered for a more senior (principal-level) position, which carries its own compensation range.
