Full description

Reuters Technology builds and runs the systems behind one of the world's largest and most trusted news organisations. Among them is a specialist machine-learning platform that screens and classifies media content at scale. In production since 2019, running every day, and now moving quickly from classical machine-learning models toward large-language-model and generative-AI pipelines on AWS.

First and foremost, we're looking for an outstanding AI/ML engineer to take technical ownership of this platform. You'll spend most of your time in the models and the code - designing, building, evaluating and shipping - and you'll set the technical direction for where the platform goes next.

It's also a role with scope to lead. You'll be the anchor for a small team and you'll be the technical point of contact for the platform's stakeholders, including a US-based partner Thomson Reuters business. We'd equally welcome a senior or staff engineer ready to grow into that and an engineering lead who has stayed genuinely close to the code.

,,About the Role :

Build and own the platform (hands-on) — the core of the role

  • Take end-to-end technical ownership of our media-screening platform, both its classical ML models and its newer LLM/GenAI pipelines, running in production on AWS.
  • Spend most of your time hands-on: design, build, evaluate and ship models and the services around them.
  • Drive the migration from classical ML toward LLM and generative-AI approaches, deciding pragmatically where modern techniques earn their place and where proven models should stay.
  • Own reliability, cost, quality and MLOps discipline for a system that runs in production every day.

Set direction and lead

  • Set the technical direction, standards and roadmap for the platform, and make the calls on architecture and approach.
  • Be accountable for delivery — planning, prioritisation, and keeping a daily-production system healthy.

Represent and partner

  • Be the technical point of contact for the platform's stakeholders, including a US-based partner Thomson Reuters business, build trust and manage expectations.
  • Partner with product, editorial and other technology teams to surface and shape high-value use cases.

Explore and expand

  • Identify and prototype new applications of ML/AI across Reuters, turning a single-purpose platform into reusable capability.

About You:

This role is likely a strong match if you recognise yourself in most of the points below. Above all we want a genuinely strong AI/ML engineer.

  • Substantial, currently hands-on experience building and shipping ML/AI systems in production: you have written the code and trained and evaluated the models yourself and still do. (Typically gained over 5+ years in ML / softML/softwareware engineering.)
  • Recent, hands-on AWS experience (e.g. SageMaker, Lambda, S3, ECS/EKS) and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Strong Python, and a solid grounding in both classical ML and modern LLM/GenAI techniques (fine-tuning, prompting, evaluation, retrieval).
  • Sound MLOps instincts: reproducible training, deployment, monitoring and cost and quality management.
  • The judgement to know when to reach for an LLM and when a simpler model wins.
  • Confidence working with stakeholders across geographies and organisational boundaries, including representing the platform to a US-based partner business.
  • Excellent communication: able to explain complex technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences alike.
  • Experience with content, media, NLP or large-scale classification problems.
  • A track record of modernising or migrating legacy ML systems to LLM/GenAI.
  • Familiarity with Terraform and AWS CDK.
  • Experience building or hiring a team, or managing stakeholders across time zones.
