Intern Software Engineer – Embedded Benchmarking & Thermal Characterization

The Microprocessors Software team in Bucharest is responsible for evaluating and optimizing the behavior of NXP's i.MX family of processors across various operating conditions. An important part of this activity is understanding how hardware components behave from a thermal, power, and performance perspective and ensuring reliable operation under different workloads, customer use cases, and environmental conditions.

We are looking for motivated students who are passionate about embedded systems, electronics, and software development. As an intern, you will contribute to the development of test applications and automated measurement solutions used to characterize temperature, power consumption, and performance on NXP platforms running in bare-metal and low-level software environments.

Responsibilities

  • Understand customer benchmarking requests and translate them into relevant test scenarios and measurement plans.
  • Execute power, performance, and thermal benchmarking activities based on customer use cases and workloads.
  • Execute temperature characterization and validation measurements on NXP i.MX platforms.
  • Develop and run bare-metal test applications for thermal and performance analysis.
  • Collect, process, and analyze measurement data from on-board sensors and external laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in developing automation scripts for test execution and data collection.
  • Support debugging activities related to hardware, software, and measurement setups.
  • Document results and prepare technical reports for internal teams and customers.
  • Present findings and recommendations based on benchmarking and characterization results.

Required Skills

  • Basic programming knowledge in C & python
  • Understanding of fundamental Embedded Systems concepts.
  • Basic knowledge of Computer Architecture and microcontrollers/processors.
  • Electronics fundamentals, including understanding of sensors, voltages, currents, and measurement equipment.
  • Ability to understand technical requirements and customer use cases.
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • English language proficiency.

Preferred Skills

  • Basic knowledge of Python for automation and data processing.
  • Familiarity with ARM-based microcontrollers or processors.
  • Familiarity with debugging tools such as JTAG, serial consoles, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
  • Experience with laboratory measurements and data acquisition systems.
  • Understanding of embedded communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, and I2C.
  • Basic knowledge of performance metrics such as CPU frequency, load, latency, throughput, power consumption, and temperature.
  • Familiarity with benchmarking, validation, or characterization activities is a plus.
  • Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools is a plus.
