Lead Architect / Project Manager

About the Project:

Project: Scalable Renovate Solution for GitLab

Responsibilities:

• Define and design the target architecture of the Renovate solution

• Design a scalable operating model capable of supporting tens of thousands of GitLab repositories

• Architect self-hosted Renovate, distributed workers/runners, job scheduling and caching

• Design solutions for GitLab API and external registry rate-limit handling

• Develop an automated repository discovery and onboarding approach

• Define and maintain central, version-controlled Renovate configurations and shared presets

• Establish update strategies, grouping rules, time windows and auto-merge policies

• Ensure security and compliance requirements, including secure credential management and least-privilege access

• Define and implement prioritisation of security-relevant and CVE-driven updates

• Establish monitoring, logging, dashboards and operational KPIs

• Plan and coordinate the rollout: pilot → rollout waves → full coverage

• Own project planning, roadmap, prioritisation and rollout management

• Coordinate stakeholders across GitLab platform operations, Security, development teams and management

• Perform technical reviews of the implementation and make key architectural decisions

• Coach and support engineers throughout the implementation

• Contribute to documentation, guidelines and developer enablement/training

• Work hands-on on prototypes and critical technical implementation questions

Requirements:

• Several years of experience as a Solution Architect, Lead Architect or Senior DevOps Engineer

• Strong experience with GitLab, preferably in large-scale environments

• Practical experience with Renovate or a comparable automated dependency management solution

• Strong DevOps and CI/CD background

• Experience designing scalable, distributed and highly automated solutions

• Solid understanding of infrastructure and platform architecture

• Experience with APIs, authentication, credential management and security best practices

• Experience with monitoring, logging and observability

• Proven project management and stakeholder management skills

• Ability to operate effectively as both a technical lead and project manager

• Hands-on and solution-oriented mindset

• Fluent English

Nice to Have:

• Enterprise-level experience with Renovate

• Kubernetes and containerisation experience

• Cloud infrastructure experience

• Experience delivering large-scale rollout or migration projects involving a high number of repositories
