The role sits within the Chief Data Office (CDO) and reports to the Data Platform Manager.
The Data Platform Engineer plays a pivotal role in delivering business value through enabling the organisation to create business value through data.
This position collaborates with colleagues and stakeholders across the organisation to provide the tools and capability enabling Data Engineering, Reporting, Advanced Analytics, Machine Learning and Gen AI.
The role requires a blend of technical expertise, business acumen, and collaboration to create platform features which promote a data-driven culture across the organisation.
The key accountabilities for the role are as follows:
Technical Delivery
- Design and Implement cloud-native data platforms capabilities that support federated use cases across data engineering, BI/reporting, advanced analytics, and AI/ML workloads.
- Deliver solutions which align to cloud platform engineering standards, patterns, and best practices to ensure consistency, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
- Ensure delivery of robust, reusable, and well-documented platform components aligned to business objectives and modern engineering practices (e.g., IaC, CI/CD, DevOps).
- Embed security-by-design principles into all platform components, including identity, access control, encryption, and network security.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with product managers, data engineers, analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and prioritise platform capabilities.
- Collaborate with cloud engineering, security, and enterprise architecture teams to align with broader technology strategy and platform roadmap.
- Work closely with platform tenant teams to design and continuously improve onboarding, delivery processes, and self-service capabilities.
- Translate business and analytical needs into clear, actionable engineering plans and deliverables.
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to ensure alignment on priorities, risks, and progress
Operational Excellence
- Ensure high availability, performance, and reliability of cloud data platforms through proactive monitoring, alerting, and incident management.
- Drive continuous improvement in deployment pipelines, development workflows, and engineering productivity.
- Support platform observability through logging, metrics, and tracing to enable rapid troubleshooting and insights.
About You
Qualifications
- Degree in a technical discipline (e.g. computer science, engineering, maths, physics) or evidence of equivalent practical experience
Knowledge/Experience:
- Strong technical hands on experience in designing, building and maintaining data platforms in an Azure, Databricks and Fabric ecosystem
- Experience in delivering and supporting federated data capabilities with clear standards and guardrails
- Experience in automating solution delivery through IAC and deployment pipeline to ensure stability, resilience and efficiency.
- Experience implementing monitoring, logging, and alerting and improving platform reliability, resilience, and performance.
- Understanding of cloud security best practices and experience implementing secure data access patterns and privacy controls
Skills:
- Strategic thinker with curious mindset and strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear, concise manner
- Languages: Terraform, Python, SQL, PowerShell.
- CI/CD: Azure DevOps pipelines for data platform deployments.
- Databricks: Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Workflows, Notebooks, Clusters, MLflow.
- Azure: ADLS Gen2, Azure Data Factory, Event Hubs/Kafka, Key Vault, Functions, Synapse. AI Foundry, Networking, APIM Knowledge, Azure App Service, App Service Plan Deployment and Configuration, Integration with Azure bot Services
- MS Fabric: Tenant Management, Workspace Private Links, Deployment, Capacity Management, Workspace Management, One Lake, Data Mirroring, Power BI
- AI Foundry : Model management, Hosted Agents Deployment and Management , Project Configuration (Connections and Governance ) and lifecycle management.
