Job Description:
Data Scientist II
Our Opportunity We are seeking a hands-on and highly motivated Data Scientist II to join our growing team. In this role, you will help build AI-powered and machine learning solutions that improve customer and agent experiences across Chewy Customer Care. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working in ambiguity, rapidly experimenting with ideas, building prototypes, and translating data science concepts into practical, scalable solutions.
As a Data Scientist II, you will contribute across the full data science lifecycle, from problem framing and data exploration to model development, experimentation, deployment, and communication of results. You will work closely with product, engineering, operations, and business stakeholders to identify opportunities where ML, and data-driven systems can create measurable impact.
What You’ll Do
- Own and contribute to the end-to-end process of identifying business problems, exploring data, building models, and refining solutions toward impact.
- Build and iterate on AI/ML prototypes quickly, testing multiple approaches and learning from results.
- Develop machine learning, deep learning, and GenAI-enabled solutions using structured, unstructured, and real-time data sources.
- Apply statistical methods, experimental design, and model evaluation techniques to measure performance and business impact.
- Conduct exploratory data analysis to uncover patterns, trends, behavioral signals, and opportunities for automation or decision support.
- Create, transform, and select features that improve model performance and support production-ready solutions.
- Build and evaluate models such as regression, classification, clustering, sequential models, recommendation models, neural networks, and other relevant ML/deep learning approaches.
- Work with real-time or near-real-time data where applicable to support intelligent, responsive customer and agent experiences.
- Interpret model outcomes, identify key drivers, and clearly communicate insights, tradeoffs, and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Partner with cross-functional teams including product managers, engineers, business analysts, and operations stakeholders to translate ambiguous needs into data-driven and AI-enabled solutions.
- Stay current with emerging AI/ML techniques and identify practical ways to apply them to customer care and business problems.
What You’ll Need
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field.
- 3+ years of experience as a Data Scientist, Machine Learning Scientist, Applied Scientist, AI/ML Engineer, or similar role.
- Strong programming skills in Python, with experience using data science and machine learning libraries.
- Experience developing and evaluating machine learning models, including supervised and unsupervised learning techniques.
- Practical knowledge of deep learning, neural networks, GenAI/LLM concepts, or AI system development.
- Experience working with SQL and relational databases.
- Strong analytical skills, including statistical modeling, hypothesis testing, experimental design, and model evaluation.
- Ability to work in ambiguity, rapidly test ideas, iterate based on feedback, and move from prototype to scalable solution.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Nice to Have
- Experience with sequential modeling, time-series modeling, real-time data, recommendation systems, NLP, or conversational AI.
- Experience building AI/ML prototypes, hackathon projects, open-source contributions, or applied AI side projects.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP, or Snowflake.
- Familiarity with AWS technologies such as SageMaker, Glue, Athena, Redshift, or Bedrock.
- Familiarity with big data technologies such as Spark, Iceberg, or dbt.
- Experience with data visualization or rapid app-building tools such as Tableau, Streamlit, or text-to-SQL solutions.
- Knowledge of retail, e-commerce, customer care, or operations domains.
- Master’s degree with specialization in AI/ML, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
