Title: Data Scientist / Senior Data Scientist
Location: Mumbai, India
Salary: Competitive
Position: Full-time
Application deadline: August 31, 2026 (applications may be reviewed as they are submitted)
About the Role
PxD is hiring a Data Scientist or Senior Data Scientist to contribute to our growing portfolio of data science and AI initiatives. This is a strong fit for someone technically capable of delivering high-impact work independently while collaborating closely with our research and technical teams.
The role sits at the intersection of applied AI, data science, and research operations — contributing to specific projects while also strengthening PxD's broader technical capacity.
We will hire at the Data Scientist or Senior Data Scientist level depending on the candidate's experience and demonstrated ability to work independently; responsibilities, scope, and seniority of ownership will scale accordingly. Senior Data Scientists are expected to lead projects end-to-end with minimal oversight and mentor junior team members; Data Scientists will work under closer guidance from senior technical staff while building toward that independence.
Key Responsibilities
AI & Data Science
- Execute AI and machine learning projects from problem framing through deployment, in consultation with senior technical staff and partners
- Build data pipelines, models, and analytical frameworks that support PxD's programs
- Identify opportunities to apply AI/ML tools to improve program delivery, targeting, and impact measurement
- Apply statistical methods, algorithms, data mining, and visualization techniques to analyze experimental and other large datasets
Technical Collaboration
- Partner closely with program leads, country teams, and senior technical staff across PxD's portfolio
- Support quality assurance on data science outputs and help embed good practices in data management and responsible AI use
- Maintain clear documentation and contribute to shared technical resources
Learning & Development
- Participate actively in a collaborative, learning-oriented technical environment
- Support capacity-building through peer collaboration, code review, and knowledge sharing
Qualifications
Required
- Degree in a quantitative field (computer science, statistics, economics, engineering, or related) or equivalent practical experience
- Proficiency in Python and/or R, with experience in at least one ML framework (e.g., scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow)
- Demonstrated experience independently leading data science or AI projects, ideally across multiple stages (from framing to deployment)
- Experience working with geospatial or remote sensing data (e.g., satellite imagery, GIS tools such as QGIS or ArcGIS)
- Experience working with complex, real-world (not just academic/clean) datasets
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical work to non-technical colleagues
Preferred
- Experience working with or within government departments or public-sector data systems
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with government officials or other non-technical institutional stakeholders
- Familiarity with causal inference, experimental design, or program evaluation
- Experience in cross-functional or multi-team environments
- Interest in or experience with low-resource or developing-country contexts
About PxD
PxD is a rapidly scaling global non-profit that harnesses the power of technology, data science, and behavioral economics to provide targeted information to farmers in low and middle income countries. Providing the right information to the right people, in the right way and at the right time, increases incomes, protects the environment, and improves well-being. We are evidence-based: we test our interventions with randomized controlled trials to prove our impact and cost effectiveness, to simultaneously learn from and improve our service, and to demonstrate our value to funders and partners. There are few programmes in international development that are as demonstrably cost effective as ours.
How to Apply
To apply, please visit the PxD website and use the online application form to submit a CV, cover letter, and brief responses to the screening questions. The position will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the application deadline of August 31, 2026, 5pm IST.
PxD is committed to building an inclusive and diverse organization. We do not make decisions based on gender, gender identity, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or any other personal characteristics that are unrelated to the role. We accommodate flexible working to make sure you are as productive and happy as you can be.
We will use any personal data you provide for recruitment purposes only.
