Android Engineer - Farmer Experience
POSITION PURPOSE:
We are hiring a hands-on Android Engineer to build and own native mobile experiences for FarmRise — an Agri-tech app used by farmers, field teams, agronomists, and agri-business users, often on low-end devices and unreliable networks. This is not a role for someone who wants a spec handed to them line by line: you will design the feature, write the Kotlin, own its performance and stability in production, and be accountable for how it behaves in the field, not just in the emulator.
You will work on features spanning field data capture, crop advisory workflows, location-based services, image capture and analysis, offline-first sync, and AI-powered insights. We are looking for someone with deep native Android fundamentals and genuine hands-on Kotlin experience — someone who treats “it works offline for a farmer with a patchy connection” as a real engineering constraint, not an edge case.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
What You Will Own — End to End
- Native Android architecture: design and evolve app architecture (MVVM/Clean Architecture), modularization, and navigation for a growing codebase used across a wide range of Android devices.
- Kotlin & Jetpack Compose: build production UI in Jetpack Compose and maintain interop with any remaining View-based screens; write idiomatic, testable, coroutine-based Kotlin as your default, not Java-first code translated into Kotlin syntax.
- Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP): own shared business logic and data layers across platforms where applicable — module boundaries, expect/actual implementations, and the judgment to know what should and should not be shared.
- Offline-first & sync: design local persistence (Room/SQLite), conflict resolution, and sync strategies for field users on low or intermittent connectivity — this is core to the product, not a nice-to-have.
- API & backend integration: integrate with RESTful and/or GraphQL backend services; handle auth, retries, and failure gracefully on unreliable networks.
- Device capabilities: own camera, location/geolocation, maps, and media-handling features end to end, including the performance and battery trade-offs they introduce.
- AI-enabled features: build smart recommendations, image-based workflows, conversational assistance, or predictive alerts by integrating LLM/ML APIs or on-device ML into the app.
- Quality & release health: own unit and integration tests for your features, drive crash-free rate and ANR reduction, and use Firebase/analytics/crash reporting to catch regressions before users do.
- CI/CD: maintain and improve build and release pipelines so shipping a feature does not depend on manual steps.
What You Will Do Day to Day
- Design, build, test, and ship Android features end to end in Kotlin, using Jetpack Compose for new UI work.
- Make and defend architecture decisions for the features you own — module boundaries, state management, and what belongs in shared KMP code.
- Debug real production issues — ANRs, crashes, memory leaks, and performance regressions across a fragmented range of Android devices — using profilers and crash reporting, not guesswork.
- Build and refine offline-capable experiences for field users, including sync and conflict handling.
- Translate ambiguous product and business requirements into a concrete technical plan without needing every detail specified upfront.
- Review code from other engineers with attention to architecture, performance, and maintainability, not just style.
- Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, and sprint planning, and represent the mobile perspective in cross-functional conversations with backend, product, and design.
WHO YOU ARE:
Required:
- 3–6 years of hands-on Android application development experience, with real production apps shipped to the Play Store that you can speak to in depth.
- Deep, hands-on Kotlin experience (3+ years): coroutines, flows, and idiomatic Kotlin as your primary way of writing Android code — not a Java developer who picked up Kotlin syntax.
- Practical, past experience building UI in Jetpack Compose in a production app — state management, recomposition performance, and Compose-View interop.
- Hands-on experience with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP): you have shipped or meaningfully contributed to shared KMP modules, and understand its trade-offs and current limitations.
- Strong native Android fundamentals: Android SDK, Jetpack components (Navigation, Lifecycle, WorkManager, DataStore/Room), and architecture patterns (MVVM/Clean Architecture) applied on real projects.
- Proven, past experience integrating mobile apps with RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs, including handling auth, retries, and offline/degraded network states.
- Hands-on experience with offline-first architecture and local persistence (Room/SQLite) — designed and shipped, not just theoretical.
- Practical experience with performance debugging and optimization — profiling tools, memory leak detection, and ANR/crash triage on real devices.
- Familiarity with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines for mobile release management.
- Ownership mindset: a demonstrated track record of taking a feature from ambiguous requirement to shipped, stable production code without needing to be micromanaged.
Preferred
- Experience integrating AI/ML-powered features — cloud AI services, on-device ML (ML Kit/TFLite), or third-party LLM APIs.
- Experience with location services, maps, geotagging, camera integrations, or sensor-based features.
- Experience with GraphQL APIs in addition to RESTful services.
- Strong data structures and algorithms background from academic or industry experience.
- Experience developing secure, scalable, and accessible mobile applications.
- Prior experience in Agri-tech, agri-inputs, precision farming, rural commerce, or supply chain domains.
