Role Overview
We are looking for a deeply hands-on Senior Java Engineer who can provide technical leadership while continuing to design, build and ship production code. You will work across several backend services rather than being assigned to one isolated project. The environment consists of distributed, cloud-native systems, with Java as the primary language and Python used across parts of the wider platform.
You will collaborate closely with Product Owners, DevOps engineers and other development teams, helping shape technical solutions across multiple services and translating product requirements into scalable backend architecture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build and maintain scalable backend services and APIs, primarily in Java
- Write production-quality code as a core part of your daily work
- Contribute to Python services and codebases when required
- Work across approximately three to four interconnected microservices
- Make and influence technical and architectural decisions
- Break down complex requirements and guide their technical implementation
- Review code and establish strong engineering standards
- Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance without formal line-management responsibility
- Collaborate with Product Owners to evaluate requirements, trade-offs and delivery approaches
- Build and operate cloud-native services, primarily on AWS
- Deploy and run containerised applications using Kubernetes and Docker
- Work with DevOps engineers on CI/CD, deployment, scalability and reliability
- Use data, analytics and operational insights to support technical decisions
- Contribute to testing, documentation and continuous improvement throughout the SDLC
- Support the adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and solutions where appropriate
Requirements:
- At least 6 years of professional backend engineering experience
- Strong, recent and hands-on commercial experience with Java
- Proven experience designing and developing microservices or distributed systems
- Professional experience contributing to production Python codebases
- Strong knowledge of AWS and cloud-native application architecture
- Solid hands-on experience with Kubernetes and Docker
- Experience designing and integrating REST APIs
- Good knowledge of SQL and relational databases
- Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern software-delivery practices
- Experience influencing architecture or leading technical decisions
- Ability to review code and mentor other engineers
- Strong understanding of testing, maintainability and production code quality
- Comfortable working across several services and technical priorities simultaneously
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and product stakeholders
- Professional working proficiency in English (C1+)
- Based within the European Union and able to work on a B2B contract
Nice to have:
- Experience with Azure alongside AWS
- Experience building or integrating AI-enabled products
- Knowledge of analytics, data-processing or event-driven systems
- Experience working in an international, distributed engineering environment
- Previous experience supporting several engineering teams or product areas
What's on Offer:
- Fully remote work from within the European Union
- Long-term B2B engagement
- Hands-on role with genuine influence over technical direction
- Opportunity to work on AI-powered systems used internationally
- Collaboration with experienced, multidisciplinary engineering teams
- More than 20 days of paid time off
- Apple equipment
- Training and professional-development budget
Diversity and Inclusion Commitment
We are dedicated to creating and sustaining an inclusive, respectful workplace for all -regardless of gender, ethnicity, or background. We actively encourage applicants from all identities and experience levels to apply and bring your authentic self to our fast-paced, supportive team.
