As a Principal Software Engineer for Foundational Network Services technology domain, you will research, define, design, build and refine the technology that keeps us one step ahead of our customers. You’ll guide the technical strategy for an organization rapidly delivering innovative services that support the build and operation of our DC sites worldwide. You will bring challenging ideas and we will support you with the latest technology, AI, tools and systems that you need to succeed. You will be essential in ensuring the team can reach their potential; working closely with them, reviewing their work, mentoring, and supporting them to develop. You will instill engineering best practices for excellence and speed. Together, you will build and maintain our platforms to enable us deliver more, at a faster pace, and with greater efficiency.

Key job responsibilities As a Principal Engineer you will be expected to: · Define the software strategy, architecture, and solutions stack for our software solutions. · Ensure the quality of architecture and design of systems. · Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions. · Fully and completely understand system inter-dependencies and limitations. · Effectively research and benchmark Amazon technology against other competing systems in the industry. · Contribute intellectual property through patents. · Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and the community on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members. · Exert influence over software teams, hardware teams, and business teams · Demonstrate excellent judgment, organizational and problem solving skills

About the team Foundational Network Services (FNS) owns the program management of new builds covering new regions, AZ, DC, LZ, and Outposts, the overall DC build, refresh and exit processes, as well as the network fabrics providing essential services to those buildings e.g. wifi, access to corporate network, security, controls, management and console. The demand on all of these areas is increasing rapidly. The services and products that we offer continues to evolve. New product developments are constant to address customer demand which sees our services expand in complexity.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor in Computer Science or related fields
  • 10+ years experience in software development
  • 5+ years experience in a technical leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of AWS services
  • Hands-on experience with scoping, design, architecture, and delivery of large-scale, high-quality service-oriented software systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 2+ years experience as a Principal-level Software Engineer
  • Proven track record of making good judgment on complex technical software issues
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, ambiguous, entrepreneurial-minded environment
  • Experience in communicating with stakeholders and senior management to drive technical decision-making on software architecture and technology choices
  • Experience of dealing with real-time processing at scale (>1M devices) would be an advantage
