POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Manager Engineering - Facilities is responsible for supporting the overall management, maintenance, and operation of the property's engineering systems, utilities, facilities, and infrastructure. The role assists in leading the Engineering Department to ensure all building systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards, while delivering an exceptional guest experience and maintaining the integrity of the hotel's physical assets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Engineering & Facilities Operations

  • Assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department and Facilities team.
  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs for all building systems, facilities, and equipment.
  • Monitor the operation and maintenance of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, kitchen, laundry, and fire life safety systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections of guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house facilities, plant rooms, and critical infrastructure.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are completed efficiently, safely, and in accordance with established standards.
  • Support the planning and execution of engineering projects, renovations, refurbishments, and asset improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in managing utility systems and implementing energy conservation and sustainability programs.
  • Ensure engineering systems are optimized to maintain guest comfort, operational efficiency, and asset reliability.

II. Maintenance Planning, Budget & Inventory

  • Assist in developing and managing preventive maintenance schedules and departmental work plans.
  • Monitor maintenance work orders and ensure timely completion of all requests.
  • Support the preparation and management of departmental operating and capital expenditure budgets.
  • Monitor departmental expenses and identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality or safety.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels of engineering spare parts, tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies.
  • Coordinate purchasing activities and ensure compliance with company procurement procedures.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records, maintenance reports, asset registers, and compliance documentation.

III. Leadership, Guest Service & Team Development

  • Provide daily leadership, support, and direction to Engineering associates and technicians.
  • Assist with staff scheduling, task allocation, and performance monitoring.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, training, coaching, and development of Engineering team members.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Build positive working relationships with guests, associates, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are conducted with minimal disruption to hotel operations and guest satisfaction.
  • Act as the point of contact for engineering-related issues in the absence of the Engineering Manager or Director of Engineering.

IV. Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, engineering standards, workplace health and safety requirements, and local regulations.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections, risk assessments, and operational audits.
  • Ensure all statutory inspections, testing, certifications, and licenses are maintained and up to date.
  • Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with hotel safety and operational requirements.
  • Investigate and report equipment failures, incidents, accidents, and safety concerns promptly.
  • Promote safe work practices and ensure the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Support emergency preparedness plans and coordinate engineering-related responses during emergencies, power outages, and equipment breakdowns.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Facilities Management, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 4-5 years of experience in engineering operations, facilities management, or building maintenance, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of hotel facilities, including electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, fire life safety, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience in managing preventive maintenance programs, contractors, and engineering projects.
  • Previous hospitality experience within a hotel, resort, or large commercial facility is highly desirable.
  • Sound understanding of workplace health and safety requirements, building compliance, and risk management practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and computerized maintenance management systems
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays as required.
  • Must have working rights in Fiji.
