Full-Stack Developer (Java), Remote (EU) – European Commission

Job role: Full-Stack Developer (Java).

Minimum experience: At least 6 years of specific professional experience in FullStack Java development.

Start date: 10/2026.

Studies required: Bachelor degree of 3 years.

Language: English (C1) MANDATORY + French (B1) will be an advantage.

Location: Remote (within the EU).

DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking an experienced Full-Stack Java Developer to join a European Commission project, working remotely from within the EU. The role involves developing, maintaining, and optimizing scalable web applications across both front-end and back-end layers, with a strong focus on Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, microservices, and modern web technologies. The successful candidate will contribute to the design and delivery of secure, high-performance enterprise solutions, collaborate with international Agile teams, and ensure high standards of code quality, testing, and technical documentation. Candidates should have at least 6 years of Full-Stack Java development experience, a Bachelor’s degree, and English proficiency at C1 level; French (B1) is considered an advantage.

Description of the tasks:

  • Development and maintenance of scalable front-end and back-end web applications using Java-based technologies.
  • Design and implementation of user interactions and responsive web interfaces.
  • Development of enterprise-level back-end applications and services.
  • Implementation of core business logic and complex business workflows.
  • Design, development, and maintenance of APIs and microservices architectures.
  • Creation and management of application components, databases, and server-side functionalities.
  • Ensuring application security, data protection, and compliance with security standards.
  • Cross-platform optimisation and responsive application development.
  • Participating in the design and implementation of scalable and high-performance software solutions.
  • Taking technical ownership and leading development activities when required.
  • Ensuring code quality, integrity, maintainability, and organisation.
  • Writing clean, efficient, and well-documented code for front-end and back-end components.
  • Analysing application performance, processes, and code to troubleshoot issues and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Performing unit testing, integration testing, debugging, and resolution of software defects.
  • Ensuring solutions meet both technical requirements and end-user expectations.
  • Writing and maintaining technical documentation, architecture documentation, and development guidelines.
  • Participating in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Collaborating with architects, business analysts, testers, and other development teams in an international environment.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Strong proficiency in Java programming language and object-oriented programming principles.
  • Excellent knowledge of Java enterprise frameworks such as Spring Framework, Spring Boot, Spring MVC, and Spring Data.
  • Good knowledge of front-end technologies such as JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, and modern JavaScript frameworks/libraries (e.g. Angular, React, or equivalent).
  • Experience in designing and developing RESTful APIs and web services.
  • Good understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems.
  • Strong knowledge of database technologies such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, or equivalent relational databases.
  • Familiarity with ORM frameworks such as Hibernate/JPA.
  • Knowledge of application servers and Java platforms (e.g. Tomcat, JBoss/WildFly, WebLogic, or equivalent).
  • Experience with software version control tools such as Git or GitLab.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Knowledge of software development methodologies (e.g. AGILE/Scrum).
  • Experience with software testing practices and tools (e.g. JUnit, Mockito, Selenium, or equivalent).
  • Capability of integration in an international/multicultural environment, rapid self-starting capability, and experience working within distributed teams.
  • Ability to participate in multilingual meetings.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment on multiple large-scale projects.
  • Excellent team player with strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English; French (B1) will be an advantage.
  • High degree of discretion and integrity is required as the applications managed and maintained may contain personal and confidential data.

Specific expertise:

  • At least six years of specific professional experience in FullStack Java development
  • Proven experience in Java backend development using Java 8+ and Spring/Spring Boot frameworks.
  • Strong experience in designing and developing REST APIs and enterprise applications.
  • Experience with front-end development technologies and integration with Java-based back-end systems.
  • Experience contributing to the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and maintainable software solutions.

Location:

  • The services shall be performed remotely in Far-site location within EU territory only.
  • Laptop will be provided by the Commission (on-site in Brussels).
  • On-site presence may be requested with a notice period of 7 days.

Rate:

· 295-315€/day.
