System Engineer – Managed Kubernetes

The Container Services team is responsible for delivering Leaseweb Managed Kubernetes: a platform that empowers customers to deploy, manage, and update their own Kubernetes clusters while simplifying the complexity that comes with running them at scale. We are looking for a motivated System Engineer to help build and evolve this product.

Our team of approximately 145 engineers works in small scrum teams, each with end-to-end responsibility for a specific product or part of our architecture. We work on a remote-first basis, coming together in person at our Amsterdam headquarters twice a year.

What is the role about?

As a System Engineer in the Container Services team, you are responsible for developing our container offering based on Kubernetes. Your main activities will be automating the deployment of Kubernetes clusters across Leaseweb's various compute offerings, as well as maintaining and monitoring those clusters.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals: software engineers, system engineers, a scrum master, product owner, and product management.

Key Responsibilities:

• Automate deployment, management, patching, and deletion of Kubernetes clusters across Leaseweb's compute offerings

• Architect, explore, evaluate, integrate and tune Kubernetes components, advising on best practices and identifying issues before they reach production

• Build and tune alerting & observability: Develop the monitoring, alerting, and logging that tells us our clusters are healthy — create & tune dashboards, alert, and metrics, using the SRE philosophy.

• Maintain the platform: Deploy new Kubernetes version, Update components, and make sure our components are secure.

• Investigate production issues, Troubleshoot, contribute to runbook and create permanent fixes for the issue we discover.

• Help the team design new features for Leaseweb's customers

• Support customers and development teams, Participate in regular on-call duty (Engineer on Duty)

• Grow the engineers around you: Share your Kubernetes expertise with engineers in other teams, mentor colleagues within your own team, and contribute to cross-functional efforts on problems bigger than any single team

• Align with the wider architecture: Make sure the team's solutions line up with the department's architecture standards, and spot where the team can improve

What we're looking for:

You love working in a team setting. You enjoy building new solutions using the latest technologies. You believe that continuous improvement also applies to yourself and have the desire to grow. You are not afraid to experiment.

• Hands-on experience operating Kubernetes at scale, supporting multiple clusters across different environments including production

• Good knowledge of the CNCF & Kubernetes ecosystem, knows enough to be able to compare choices, and state tradeoff for common technology choices.

• Mastery of ArgoCD or a similar GitOps tool for continuous delivery, with a solid understanding of GitOps, SRE, and DevOps principles

• Demonstrable knowledge of Kubernetes inner-workings, components, networking and storage fundamentals

• Experience working & architecting cloud-native applications

• Solid knowledge of Linux operating systems, with experience performing standard system administration tasks (OS maintenance, networking, DNS, backups)

• Good communication skills (in English)

• Experience with containerized application packaging and deployment

• Scripting skills in Shell and/or Python for automation and tooling

• Familiarity with CI/CD tooling

Nice to have:

• Experience with Golang

• Previous contributions to open-source projects such as Kubernetes or related tools
