Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Data Scientist will support the data science capabilities. They are responsible for developing and maintaining ML/AI models, data models, and tools to support business needs. The incumbent will work with the business to establish requirements and data requests for analytical strategic projects. Obtain an understanding of the business needs of organizations and the ability to generate actionable insights using various methods.

In this role, the successful candidate will leverage HR and workforce data to support strategic business decisions, workforce planning, and organizational effectiveness initiatives. The individual will develop forecasts and analytics related to employee time utilization, including vacation, sick leave, and other absence trends; support labor and contract negotiations through workforce data analysis and insights; analyze workforce trends to predict attrition and turnover risks; evaluate staffing capacity and workforce availability by assessing planned and anticipated employee time off; and provide data-driven recommendations that support workforce planning, operational readiness, resource allocation, and overall business performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for planning, organizing, and controlling resources/processes to achieve project/program objectives within scope, time, quality, and budget constraints
  • Prioritize business initiatives and structure projects for optimum success taking into consideration budget, head count, and regulatory requirements
  • Conduct an analytics initiative from ideation through production and adoption and have an understanding of the life cycle of an analytics initiative and the common pitfalls
  • Communicate data science outputs and support the creation of models and solutions that provide insights for the business to interpret and execute successfully
  • Independently or with a team to evaluate, select, build, train, & apply the most effective modeling approach using Data Science theory.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong acumen in quantitative analytics and structured problem solving
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Knowledge and understanding of data modeling, machine learning algorithms, statistical analysis, data visualization, and data engineering
  • Ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Project management knowledge, ability to identify the project/business requirements
  • Ability to compile, organize, interpret, and communicate data and results concisely
  • Process management skills
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Data Science theory and application.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, or related field two (2) or more years of experience Data Science, Data Analysis, Data Modeling and understanding business needs.
  • [OR] Associate Degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, or related field four (4) or more years of experience Data Science, Data Analysis, Data Modeling and understanding business needs.
  • [OR] High School Diploma or GED six (6) or more years of experience Data Science, Data Analysis, Data Modeling and understanding business needs.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting Human Resources (HR) functions and working with workforce-related data is highly preferred.
  • Employee timekeeping and timecode management, including leave programs such as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
  • Union and non-union workforce structures, including differences in compensation, benefits, and labor agreements.
  • Talent acquisition and recruiting processes, including applicant tracking data, organizational structures, and workforce planning considerations.
  • Employment policies, labor laws, and government regulations related to workforce management, including Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and protected status requirements.
