This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Engineering Project Manager - Substation Engineering based in United States.

This role offers the opportunity to lead the engineering delivery of substation and interconnection work across utility-scale renewable energy projects. You will manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, taking ownership of scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, and client expectations from kickoff through closeout. The position requires strong technical understanding and the ability to translate contract and proposal requirements into clear delivery direction. You will coordinate electrical, civil, structural, and power systems engineering teams to keep work aligned, accurate, and on schedule. As a key client-facing leader, you will communicate project status, risks, technical issues, and decisions to diverse stakeholders. You will also mentor project staff and contribute to projects that support the continued expansion of renewable energy infrastructure.

Accountabilities:

  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, deliverables, and invoicing from kickoff through closeout, applying established project management practices and independent professional judgment.
  • Lead multiple substation and interconnection projects concurrently, including complex assignments involving multidisciplinary engineering scopes.
  • Review and interpret contract, proposal, and scope language to determine project obligations and clearly communicate delivery implications to internal teams and clients.
  • Coordinate internal engineering resources and external subconsultants, assigning work and aligning resources with project priorities and deadlines.
  • Orchestrate collaboration between civil, electrical, power systems, and structural engineering disciplines to sequence work effectively and meet committed deliverable dates.
  • Manage submittals, RFIs, change requests, project risks, scope changes, and schedule impacts through timely resolution and decision-making.
  • Serve as a technical and project reference point for the delivery team, directing technical questions to the appropriate discipline leads and maintaining alignment across workstreams.
  • Review project deliverables for quality, client expectations, contractual obligations, utility standards, and applicable jurisdictional requirements.
  • Maintain accurate project records, equipment information, correspondence, and other documentation so materials remain organized and readily accessible.
  • Act as a primary client contact, lead project meetings, and communicate project status, risks, technical issues, and recommended actions clearly to stakeholders and subcontractors.
  • Contribute scope definitions, budget estimates, schedule inputs, and technical insights to proposals and business development activities.
  • Assign and direct engineering team members while mentoring project engineers and less experienced staff on project delivery and client engagement.
  • Share substation project delivery knowledge across the broader project management team to strengthen organizational capabilities and best practices.
  • Travel to project sites, client meetings, and other business locations as needed to support successful project execution.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a closely related field, or comparable applicable professional experience.
  • At least 5 years of project management experience within engineering consulting, EPC construction, renewable energy, or a related industry.
  • Direct experience delivering high-voltage projects, including substation, interconnection, transmission, or comparable infrastructure projects, as a project manager or project engineer.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret substation, transmission, and medium- or high-voltage contract and proposal terms and explain their implications to technical teams and clients.
  • Proven ownership of project scope, schedule, budget, invoicing, deliverables, and overall project performance.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to establish credibility with technical clients, engineering teams, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage several concurrent projects, prioritize competing demands, and resolve complex project issues with limited direction.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and external subconsultants is preferred.
  • Previous substation engineering experience, including electrical or structural engineering exposure, is preferred.
  • Experience working for a design-build organization or substation engineering and construction firm is an advantage.
  • Greenfield substation project experience and familiarity with the utility-scale renewable energy development lifecycle are preferred.
  • PMP certification is preferred but not required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 15% of the time, including occasional overnight travel, for project sites, client meetings, and team events.
  • Valid driver’s license, required auto insurance, eligibility to rent vehicles for business purposes, and a driving record that meets applicable insurability requirements.
