Full description

Do you love uncovering hidden problems and making systems stronger than ever?

We’re building something brand new at ING, the Systemic Cause Investigators (SCI), a greenfield team that will transform how we learn from incidents.

By combining SRE principles, systemic thinking, and AI-driven analysis, you’ll help us:

  • Spot risks earlier.
  • Find patterns no one else sees.
  • Drive improvements that last.

This is your chance to be part of a small, high-impact team with the freedom to innovate, experiment, and influence the reliability of systems used by millions of customers.

The team ING is a leading global bank, with retail & wholesale business around the globe. The SCI team works in the CTO domain “Engineering & Reliability”. We share our passion for reliability and resilience. Our success is measured by the availability of our ING critical services.

The SCI Team (Systemic Cause Investigators) enhances IT system reliability by analysing post-mortems from all ING entities across the globe through a systemic lens. This means examining problems and solutions as part of a broader, interconnected system rather than in isolation. This team will uncover deeper causes of disruptions and help to implement lasting improvements to prevent recurrence, addressing the gap in our current processes with a data-driven approach.

Roles and responsibilities As a Systemic Cause Investigator, you will:

  • Participate in and facilitate blameless post-mortems after major incidents.
  • Analyse new and historical incident data to find systemic issues and improvement opportunities.
  • Strengthen the postmortem process to deliver high-quality, actionable insights.
  • Correlate technical data to uncover hidden problems and propose solutions that span teams.
  • Apply SRE principles to guide systemic improvements.
  • Communicate findings to stakeholders and managers to help them prioritise the highest-impact initiatives.
  • Coach engineers in conducting effective blameless post-mortems.
  • Translate complex findings into clear messages for management, helping build support for important improvements.

How to succeed We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious. Keep learning. Take on responsibility. In return, we’ll back you to develop into an even more awesome version of yourself.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5–10 years’ IT experience in live systems (infrastructure, development, or data).
  • Proven knowledge of SRE concepts and operational reliability.
  • A curious mindset — always asking “why” and “how do we prevent this from happening again?”.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to connect patterns in complex data.
  • Experience with statistical analysis is a plus, helping to uncover trends, hidden relationships, and systemic issues within large datasets.
  • Passionate about major trends in technology
  • Attend events and workshops on specific topics
  • Curiosity to always look out for innovation opportunities
  • Excellent command of spoken and written in English

Key Soft Skills

  • You guide open, blameless conversations, influence without pushing, and challenge ideas respectfully to reach the best outcomes.

Tools & Methods

  • You’ll work with tools like ServiceNow, Grafana, Kibana, Power BI, and Azure DevOps to track incidents, monitor systems, and analyse trends. Experience with these is a plus but being quick to learn matters most.
