Java Backend Software Engineer
Location: Belgrade
EV Connect is looking for a Java Backend Software Engineer early in their career who shares our passion for electric vehicles and their ability to positively impact transportation, air quality, and energy independence for generations to come.
You'll join a team building and running the cloud SaaS platform that operates EV charging networks — the services that talk to physical charging stations, price and bill sessions, move money to site hosts, and keep tens of thousands of chargers online. It's a real distributed system with real consequences when it's wrong and you'll have people around you who've been in it for years.
We're hiring at this level deliberately. You are not expected to arrive knowing our stack.
What you'll do:
- Build and maintain backend services in Java and Spring Boot, working in a mature codebase alongside senior engineers
- Write and extend automated tests — unit and integration — as a normal part of shipping, not an afterthought
- Integrate with networked charging stations and third-party network operators, including open protocols like OCPP and OCPI
- Debug production issues: read logs and traces, form a hypothesis, find the root cause, fix it
- Participate in code review — both receiving it and, as you ramp, reviewing others' work
- Take part in technical design discussions with leads and architects, contributing and learning how these decisions get made
- Write secure code, with OWASP practices as part of your normal review checklist
- Make small improvements to the frontend when a feature spans the stack (React, JavaScript/TypeScript) — supported, and not the bulk of the job
What we're looking for
- 2 years of professional software development experience, or equivalent through internships, apprenticeships, or substantial personal projects
- Solid fundamentals in an object-oriented language; Java is what we use
- Experience building or consuming RESTful APIs, and comfort with HTTP and JSON
- Some experience writing automated tests, and an understanding of why they matter
- Working knowledge of Git and a normal pull-request workflow
- Enough command line and Linux to be productive: navigating a filesystem, tailing logs, running builds
- Familiarity with at least one database, relational or document. We're primarily MongoDB, with some relational
- Clear written communication. A lot of engineering here happens in tickets, PR comments, and design docs
What you'll pick up here
You don't need these on day one. This is what the work will teach you:
- Spring Boot in a large multi-module Maven monorepo
- Spock and Groovy for testing, plus TestContainers for integration tests against real MongoDB
- MongoDB at scale — indexing, schema evolution, migrations on live collections
- Microservice and event-driven architecture, including service-to-service calls with Feign
- AWS (SNS, SQS, Lambda, Cognito), Kubernetes, and Docker
- CI/CD pipelines, and what it takes to deploy safely without downtime
- Observability — structured logging, metrics, and tracing in Datadog
- EV charging protocols: OCPP for stations, OCPI for roaming between networks
- Internationalization and localization, since we operate across the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia
We'd like to talk to you if:
- You want to understand why the code works, not just that it does
- You write code meant to be read — by a teammate, and by you in six months
- You ask questions early instead of quietly getting stuck
- You can explain a technical problem to someone who doesn't share your context
- You're comfortable being new, and you get better fast when someone reviews your work
- You care about the mission. We're electrifying transportation; the code you write ends up in physical chargers people depend on
Especially interesting to us
- Any exposure to the EV or energy space, or curiosity about open charging protocols (OCPP, OCPI, OpenADR)
- Experience with IoT or hardware-adjacent software, where the physical device can be offline, slow, or lying to you
- A side project, open-source contribution, or piece of work you're proud to walk us through
- Interest in payments, billing, or anything where correctness is non-negotiable
What We Offer
- You'll have a named onboarding buddy and a senior engineer as your primary reviewer
- Every change goes through code review; we treat it as teaching, not gatekeeping
- Regular 1:1s with a clear conversation about what growing to the next level looks like
- International, multicultural, and supportive work environment.
- Hybrid work model and flexible hours.
- Private health insurance.
- 24–30 days of annual leave.
- Financial, legal, and psychological assistance program.
- Summer recharge program (July & August).
- Gym & sports activities.
- Family-friendly policies (Parental & Care leave).
- Learning & development budget for certifications.
- Recognition and rewards through our StepUp platform.
- Career growth in a global sustainability leader company.
