Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby)

Due to our expansion in Bulgaria, we are looking for an experienced Senior Ruby Backend Engineer to take ownership of backend systems powering our mobile-first, consumer-facing applications.

You’ll translate product and business goals into technical roadmaps, drive architectural decisions, and ensure our backend services are secure, scalable, and performant. This is a hands-on role where you’ll balance coding, mentoring, and shaping engineering practices. launches and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

• Own and evolve the technical vision for Ruby on Rails applications and backend services.

• Build and maintain robust RESTful APIs, ensuring secure authentication, authorisation, and data flows.

• Design scalable solutions on AWS, including RDS, Lambda, and Kubernetes workloads.

• Identify and resolve bottlenecks, improve API speed, and design effective caching/database strategies.

• Establish and continuously improve deployment pipelines, coding standards, and code review practices.

• Embed security-by-default across the SDLC, ensuring compliance with frameworks like ISO 27001 and SOC2.

• Work closely with frontend teams, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver impactful features.

• Create and maintain clear technical documentation and design specifications.

• Step in during critical production incidents, lead root cause analysis, and drive prevention strategies.

Skills & Experience

• 4+ years of professional experience with Ruby on Rails and a good understanding of JavaScript/TypeScript, and MVC architecture.

• Strong database management experience with PostgreSQL/MySQL, AWS RDS, and ORM tools like ActiveRecord.

• Proficiency with RSpec, Git, mocking, and unit testing principles.

• Experience with GraphQL APIs.

• Experience working in AWS cloud environments.

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines in fast-paced or scaling organisations.

• Proven experience designing and implementing features using AI-powered workflows, including leveraging AI agents and automation to build scalable, intelligent applications.

• Confidence navigating ambiguity, with a detail-oriented approach to clean, high-quality code.

Work Mode & Salary

• Remote working. This role is only open to candidates who are residing in Bulgaria.

• Gross annual salary: €60,000 to €65,000 based on experience.

Interview Process

• Online interview with the Senior Talent Advisor.

• A 75 min panel interview with two Engineering Leads. This will be a behavioural- and technical interview.

• Final interview with the Director of Engineering, and the CPTO.
