The opportunity
The Data Insights Engineer – Digital Product plays an important role in building the trusted, scalable data foundations behind the AFL’s digital experiences. Working across web and app platforms, this role helps turn audience behaviour, content performance and platform engagement into reliable insight that supports better product decisions.
You’ll design and maintain the pipelines, tracking frameworks and analytics infrastructure that make digital data accurate, consistent and accessible. Based at AFL House, you’ll work closely with product, engineering and analytics teams to strengthen governance, privacy and responsible data use across the organisation.
What you’ll own
You’ll help create the reliable, well-structured data that powers digital insight across the AFL. This role combines hands-on data engineering with strong collaboration to improve the quality, accessibility and trustworthiness of digital analytics.
You’ll add value through:
- Designing, building and maintaining robust data pipelines for digital product analytics and reporting
- Implementing and managing event tracking frameworks across web and app platforms to support consistent, scalable data capture
- Improving the integrity, reliability and accessibility of digital analytics data across platforms
- Structuring clean, governed datasets that support reporting, dashboards and deeper analysis
- Establishing and maintaining data governance standards, including definitions, documentation and consistent metric use
- Monitoring data quality through validation, anomaly detection and issue resolution
- Partnering with product and engineering teams to define tracking requirements and align instrumentation with business needs
- Troubleshooting data discrepancies, tracking issues and integration challenges
- Developing reusable data assets, documentation and standards that lift data capability across the organisation
- Supporting analysts with fit-for-purpose data for behavioural analysis and decision making
- Promoting best practice in data governance, privacy and responsible data use across digital teams
- Using technology and AI to continuously improve how work is delivered and support more efficient, effective and innovative outcomes
What you’ll bring
- Demonstrated experience in data engineering, analytics engineering or digital data platform roles
- Strong proficiency in SQL and experience working with large-scale datasets
- Experience with cloud data platforms and tooling, including GCP, BigQuery, Google Tag Manager and/or Snowflake
- Experience building and maintaining data pipelines and working with data warehousing solutions
- Strong understanding of digital analytics data structures, including event-based tracking
- Hands-on experience with tag management and instrumentation frameworks
- Experience with data modelling and structuring data for analytics and reporting use cases
- Experience enabling datasets for reporting and working with data visualisation tools
- Strong problem-solving capability, with sound judgement to diagnose and resolve data quality and tracking issues
- The ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- High attention to detail and a strong focus on data accuracy, consistency and reliability
- Experience implementing or working within data governance frameworks, including definitions, lineage, access controls and quality standards
- Understanding of data privacy obligations and responsible data use in digital environments
- Understanding of digital product environments, including web and app analytics, is advantageous
- Experience working in event-driven or real-time data contexts is beneficial
- Curiosity, initiative and a continuous improvement mindset
