JOB TITLE: Data Analyst – WFP Volunteer

UNIT/DIVISION: WFP Innovation Accelerator (INNA),

DUTY STATION (City, Country):  Munich, Germany to be based in Nairobi Kenya

DURATION: 4 to 6 months.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

Based in Munich, Germany, the Innovation Accelerator provides WFP employees, entrepreneurs, and start-ups with funding, hands-on support, and access to WFP’s global operations. Through the Innovation Accelerator, WFP is leveraging unprecedented advances in digital innovation - such as mobile technology, artificial intelligence and blockchain - and new business models to transform the way it serves vulnerable communities across the world. Most recently, the Accelerator runs programmes for external partners such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and others.

The Volunteer will support the WFP Innovation Accelerator and Frontiers AI team in data analysis, reporting, project coordination, and operational support activities related to the Transaction Anomaly Detection (TAD) initiative. Working under the guidance of senior data specialists and project leads, the volunteer will contribute to data preparation, quality assurance, documentation, dashboard maintenance, and stakeholder coordination to facilitate the successful implementation of innovation projects.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Under the supervision of AI project manager

  • Conduct analyses into WFP Cash-Based Transfer (CBT) distributions and redemption patterns to identify natural clusters, regional behavioral variations, and data inconsistencies.
  • Support exploratory data analysis activities by identifying trends, patterns, and data quality issues.
  • Support the Implementation of multi-horizon aggregation strategies (e.g., short-term vs. long-term windows) to calculate "Profile Deltas" that capture sudden behavioral shifts in beneficiary accounts.
  • Support in monitoring data quality and flag inconsistencies for review by senior analysts.
  • Ensure compliance with WFP’s data governance, privacy, and security policies, safeguarding sensitive data and maintaining ethical standards in data usage. 2. Operational Deployment and Project Management.
  • Provide feedback to system sponsors for continuous improvements to data quality, system performance, and adherence to standards. Assist in coordinating communication between project teams, country offices, and external partner
  • Contribute to the development and utilization of data quality monitoring tools to improve accuracy, consistency, and adherence to best practices in data management. 3. Execute any other task required to support the activities of the Head of the Accelerator Office.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

●      Cleaned and organized datasets supporting project activities.

●      Periodic analytical summaries and reporting outputs.

●      Updated project documentation, trackers, and meeting records.

●      Contributions to dashboard maintenance and reporting processes.

●      Research briefs and background materials supporting innovation initiatives.

●      Documented lessons learned and feedback from project activities.

●      Ensure that all work and materials developed during the Volunteer Assignment are well documented and available to the WFP Innovation Accelerator team.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

 

Education: Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.

Knowledge & Skills:    

  • Data Analytics & Engineering:
  • Proficiency in data manipulation and querying (e.g., SQL, Python/Pandas).
  •  cross-functional communication, analytical problem-solving, and the ability to translate between complex algorithms and on-the-ground operational realities.

Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required. Intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is beneficial.

Conditions: This is an unpaid voluntary position with a fixed duration period of up-to 6 months - No guarantee of extension beyond this time period.
