Commercial Project Manager

THE COMMERCIAL PROJECT MANAGER POSITION
SunStrong Management is searching for a Commercial Project Manager (PM) responsible for the end-to-end planning, execution, and delivery of commercial & industrial (C&I) and utility-scale solar projects, including re-powering initiatives, major remediation work, and battery energy storage system (BESS) installations. This is a remote role overseeing multiple concurrent projects, ensuring they are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards, contractual obligations, and customer expectations. The PM works cross-functionally with various engineering, procurement, construction, O&M, safety, asset management, subcontractors, and landowners to ensure smooth execution and high-quality project delivery.
COMMERCIAL PROJECT MANAGER RESPONSIBILITIESProject Planning & Pre-Construction
- Lead development of project schedules, budgets, scopes of work, and risk assessments for C&I and utility-scale solar and BESS projects with Field Service Partners.
- Conduct site assessments, walkdowns, and constructability reviews for re-powering scopes and remediation activities.
- Develop project execution plans, staffing plans, QA/QC plans, and safety plans.
- Coordinate design reviews and ensure engineering deliverables support the scope of work.
- Support procurement activities, supplier evaluations, and material forecasting.
Project Execution & Delivery
- Oversee all field work, subcontractor performance, and construction progress.
- Manage construction activities including module swaps, inverter refreshes, RSD retrofits, tracker repairs, BOS replacements, and BESS installations.
- Ensure adherence to NEC, IEEE, UL, AHJ requirements, and utility rules.
- Monitor project progress, production rates, and sequencing.
- Facilitate project meetings and resolve field issues, RFIs, and conflicts.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce site safety requirements and compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and internal safety programs.
- Oversee JHAs, PEC/LOTO requirements, tailboard meetings, and incident reporting.
- Ensure subcontractor alignment with safety standards.
Contract & Financial Management
- Manage project budgets, cost reporting, forecasting, and revenue recognition.
- Oversee contracts, change orders, purchase orders, and vendor invoicing.
- Track scope deviations and negotiate change orders.
- Ensure projects meet margin targets and financial KPIs.
Commissioning & Closeout
- Coordinate commissioning for solar and BESS systems.
- Manage QA/QC punch lists, inverter startups, EMS/SCADA integration, and utility witness testing.
- Ensure delivery of as-builts, manuals, reports, warranties, and training.
- Lead lessons-learned reviews.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, renewable energy, or related field preferred.
- 3+ years of C&I or utility-scale solar project management experience.
- Experience with BESS deployments strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, trackers, BOS, civil/structural work.
- Proficiency with MS Project, P6, Procore, or Smartsheet.
- Strong financial, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to travel as needed.
