Overview
Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Database Applications Engineer I at our Global Operations & Innovation Center in Wheeling, WV.
Responsibilities
The Applications Engineer I reporting to the Application Database Administration Manager, supports the implementation, administration, and ongoing operation of the firm’s on-premises and cloud applications under the guidance of senior engineers. The role provides second-level support, participates in application lifecycle activities and business automation initiatives, and works with technical teams, business stakeholders, and vendors to deliver secure, reliable, and well-documented solutions.
- Support a defined portfolio of on-premises and cloud applications, including configuration, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, maintenance, upgrades, and retirement, with guidance from senior engineers.
- Provide second-level application support; investigate incidents, test fixes, identify recurring issues, and coordinate resolution with service teams, application owners, and vendors.
- Plan and execute application changes and releases, including testing, validation, rollout, rollback preparation, and post-implementation review in accordance with change-management standards.
- Gather and document business and technical requirements; help evaluate applications and identify solutions that improve lawyer and business-professional productivity and client service.
- Assist business stakeholders to analyze processes and design, build, test, document, and support business automation solutions using Power Automate.
- Support Power Platform operations and governance through administrative tools and the Center of Excellence Starter Kit, including environment, inventory, adoption, compliance, and tenant-hygiene activities.
- Enable citizen developers through guidance, documentation, reusable standards, training, and governed development practices.
- Support approved AI and Microsoft Copilot capabilities through configuration, testing, troubleshooting, user guidance, adoption, and responsible-use practices.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, knowledge articles, runbooks, and accurate project, time, ticket, and change-management records.
- Communicate status, risks, and issues clearly to technical and nontechnical stakeholders and contribute to assigned projects and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Participate in scheduled after-hours maintenance, on-call coverage, and overtime as required
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Two or more years of experience supporting enterprise applications, endpoints, or Microsoft technologies; law firm or professional-services experience is preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365, Windows, Azure, Intune, and cloud-based application environments.
- Strong knowledge of laptop and desktop hardware.
- Solid understanding of networking and server operating systems.
- Experience supporting and troubleshooting client-side remote access solutions, such as Zscaler and Cisco AnyConnect.
- Experience using Nexthink or a similar digital employee experience platform to monitor and improve laptop and desktop performance and troubleshoot end-user issues is a big plus.
- Ability to troubleshoot applications methodically, document findings, test changes, and escalate effectively.
- Foundational understanding and/or experience with Power Platform, particularly Power Automate and Power Apps; Power BI exposure is helpful.
- Experience with PowerShell, SQL or relational databases, virtual desktops or applications, macOS, legal applications, or AI prompting and agents is preferred.
- Experience with End Point Configuration Manger, Intune, Entra, VMWare or equivalent endpoint management tools.
- Experience with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) or Desktop as a Service (DaaS), such as Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), W365 Cloud PC and Citrix.
- Strong written and verbal communication, organization, customer service, and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Compensation and Benefits
The expected salary range for this position is between $55,000 - $75,000.
Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick’s estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
