Within the Group, you will join the Group Risk Management (GRM) department, which brings together high level and multidisciplinary staff with engineers, PhDs, actuaries, data scientists and financials split between Paris, Zürich and Madrid. Its main missions are focused on the following key areas:
- Analyze, model and aggregate the Group’s risks (economic capital)
- Fefine and implement the process enabling us to secure the undertaken risks (risk appetite, assets accumulation, longevity, natural catastrophe...)
- Optimize the Group protections (reinsurance, securitization, hedging, etc.) to meet the desired strategy.
Within this Department, you will be part of the team GRM Property & Casualty (P&C) Natural Perils team, which is organized in two excellence centers (CAT Data, Analytics, and Platforms, R&D NatCat Modeling and Reinsurance). The Data Engineer will report to the manager of CAT Data, Analytics, and Platforms, under the supervision of Group Head of Natural Perils Manager.
YOUR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This opportunity is a 4 month short-term contract (CDD / STA) starting in September 2026.
As a Data Engineer in CAT Analytics, your primary objective is to support the automation of catastrophe (CAT) data processes and develop advanced geospatial visualization tools. This role is crucial for enhancing internal analysis, decision-making, and collaboration across AXA's CAT stakeholders. The selected candidate will benefit from close collaboration with the cat analysts, data engineers and cat modelers across the team.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Tool Development and Automation:
- Lead the development of innovative tools for data collection, treatment, modeling, and reporting.
- Contribute to the automation of data workflows related to CAT exposure and loss data, by supporting current tools for real-time assessment of climatic events, earthquakes, and wildfires.
- Create geospatial visualization tools and dashboards to display outputs from internal catastrophe models, such as risk maps and exposure concentration overlays.
- Collaborate with the business and technical teams to foster collaboration and smooth integration of new features into the GIS platform. This implies weekly interaction with IT developers and continuous interactions with respective audience.
- Ensure proper documentation, testing, and maintenance of visualization and automation scripts.
2. Assess CAT Risks for AXA Operational Entities (CAT Process):
- Provide technical support to local entities around the collection of their exposure data.
- Assess CAT risks associated with these exposures using dedicated catastrophe modeling tools.
- Deliver an AXA view of the gross risk for several entities, enabling them to purchase adequate reinsurance in line with their risk appetite.
YOUR PROFILE
- Master’s degree or Engineering diploma in mathematics, statistics, data sciences, Earth sciences, and/or geospatial sciences.
- 0-3 years of experience (apprenticeship or internships included) with exposure to data engineering or geospatial data processing.
- Interest in climate and Earth sciences.
- Curiosity to learn about (re)insurance and actuarial science, experience is a plus.
- IT skills: • R or Python, basics required, proficiency appreciated, with an interest in visualization libraries.
- Experience or interest in developing GIS maps and integrating outputs from scientific or risk models.
- French and Business English – fluent (spoken and written).
- Strong problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail.
- Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across technical and business teams.
- Curious, rigorous, and eager to develop expertise in natural catastrophe data.
- Leadership, autonomy and team spirit / project management abilities.
