About the Role

General Motors has driven success in the EV market through a strong focus on High Voltage Battery Safety.  The Thermal Runaway Propagation Diagnostics, Prognostics and Analytics (TRP DP&A) organization is at the center of this effort with a mission to find and mitigate defects before they can result in catastrophic failures in our EVs.  The team develops both onboard and offboard software solutions for this purpose, as well as responding to emergency calls through data and information support. All of this is aligned with our core company priority for keeping customers safe.

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Requirements and Controls Design team that defines TRP Solution requirements and develops robust controls designs for diagnosing internal battery hardware failures that may lead to thermal runaway.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of engineers for TRP Requirements and Controls fostering an inclusive, high-performance team culture grounded in GM’s winning behaviors and values with keen focus on safety
  • Lead, coach and develop the team, including hiring and performance management
  • Foster career growth and technical skillset development of team members
  • Empower self-organizing, self-managing teams to deliver products on time with quality executions in an agile environment
  • Foster a culture of innovation and agility
  • Enable the use of requirements and controls best practices to develop robust solutions and designs
  • Find opportunities for the application of data to expand the impact for the organization
  • Drive the use of agile principles and practices, identifying and eliminating impediments and enabling the team to be successful
  • Remove roadblocks and lead timely resolution of product quality issues to ensure launch quality
  • Implement process improvements for product quality enhancements
  • Establish and monitor budget for responsible activities
  • Execute resource planning for required activities
  • Support cross functional Key Strategic Initiatives
  • Support the vision and roadmap for the organization’s future
  • Build relationships internal to the team and with external partner organizations for alignment on tactical and strategic plans

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering to include Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics
  • Minimum of 7 years of engineering experience related to embedded control systems, data analytics, related hardware, and/or safety critical system development
  • Demonstrated technical background in Electrification Systems, Battery High Voltage or Thermal Runaway Propagation
  • Demonstrated results in successful project execution
  • Excellent multi-functional communication and leadership skills - able to get multiple teams moving in the same direction and represent the organization in high level forums
  • Working knowledge of the software development and delivery process, focus on requirements and controls design

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)

  • Master of Science in Engineering and/or Master of Business Administration
  • Leadership experience of teams of engineers responsible for developing embedded control systems
  • Working knowledge of HV RESS systems and their failure modes
  • Leadership experience in safety compliance of embedded systems
  • Experience in working in an Agile development framework
  • Experience in systems engineer approach for product quality

Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
