Newfire is seeking a Senior Android Engineer

What's the Project? Join the team that is building a high-impact clinical software solution designed to modernize real-time communication within busy healthcare environments. Developed as a high-performance interactive application for large-format displays, it replaces traditional dry-erase boards with dynamic, centralized patient data, shift schedules, and key operational insights. Candidates joining this project will tackle exciting engineering challenges at the intersection of complex UI/UX and robust device-level integration, and will collaborate with hardware/device partners to ensure the application seamlessly integrates with specialized display units and system-level permissions

Your day-to-day activities:

  • Develop, test, and maintain the high-performance background services and system-level code that powers interactive large-format displays and bedside TV applications
  • Collaborate with hardware partners to implement device-level capabilities, privileged app permissions, and custom OS integrations (such as remote resets and log capture)
  • Evaluate technical tradeoffs and prototype solutions to inform core roadmap decisions
  • Participate in active sprint ceremonies, engage in peer code reviews, and work closely with product management and client engineering leads to execute on parallel technical tracks

You’re a perfect match if you have:

  • 6+ years of Android engineering experience, with a strong focus on system-level components, background processing, and service architecture
  • Strong knowledge of the Android SDK
  • Expertise in Foreground Services, process lifecycle management, Low Memory Killer (LMK) tuning, thread scheduling, and preventing OS-level service termination (Doze mode/battery optimization bypasses)
  • Experience building resilient background sync engines using WebSockets, MQTT, or gRPC
  • Deep understanding of Inter-Process Communication (IPC)
  • Strong emphasis on clean code, modular design, state management, and comprehensive unit/integration testing
  • Strong understanding of REST architecture
  • Strong knowledge of OOP principles and design
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Fast research & learning skills
  • Clear, confident verbal & written communication skills to collaborate directly with cross-functional product and engineering stakeholders 

Nice to have:

  • AOSP / Embedded Android: hands-on exposure to custom Android Open Source Project (AOSP) builds or custom Android firmware/ROM configurations 
  • Deep knowledge of Android Enterprise & MDM APIs: Hands-on experience with DevicePolicyManager, Device Owner /
  • Profile Owner modes, Lock Task mode (Kiosk), and enterprise provisioning
  • Hardware & OEM Collaboration: Experience working alongside OEM hardware vendors (e.g., custom board bring-ups, serial communication, hardware vendor APIs).
  • Healthcare & Compliance: Familiarity with clinical device deployments, HIPAA compliance, or secure on-device data storage protocols
  • Flutter / Cross-Platform: Experience with (or a willingness to learn and contribute to) our cross-platform Flutter application as needed
