Senior iOS Software Engineer (Native / Metal)

Job Description

General Info

This position is on-site in Budapest and requires EU residency or an exiting EU work visa.

We are developing a breakthrough imaging and 3D technology platform currently under provisional patent. In this role you will write the high-quality native iOS code that serves as the mobile face of that platform — the app through which end users capture, interact with, and experience the underlying technology. This is an iOS-first, deeply technical engineering role: your work centers on native Swift and Objective-C, GPU programming in Metal, and the extraction and processing of raw data directly from the device camera sensors. Working within an architecture set by the mobile and platform leads, you will focus on implementation craft at the lowest levels of the stack — fast, correct, memory-efficient, platform-idiomatic code, and the performance and reliability of the imaging and 3D features you ship.

This is an expert-level individual-contributor position. We are looking for someone who is genuinely fluent at the native and Metal layers of iOS and who has hands-on experience pulling raw, uncompressed data off camera sensors and turning it into a real-time imaging pipeline. Android experience is a welcome plus, but it is not a requirement for this role.

Tasks

Native iOS & Metal Development

  • Write and maintain fully native iOS code in Swift and Objective-C, prioritising performance, reliability, and clean, platform-idiomatic implementation.
  • Design and implement GPU-accelerated imaging and 3D pipelines in Metal — custom shaders, compute kernels, command-buffer scheduling, and efficient CPU/GPU data flow — tuned for real-time throughput on device.
  • Access and extract raw data directly from the camera sensors (for example RAW / Bayer capture, per-frame pixel buffers, depth and multi-camera streams) via AVFoundation and the lower-level capture and image APIs, and feed that data into the imaging and 3D processing chain.
  • Integrate deeply with the iOS imaging and graphics stack, including AVFoundation, Core Image, Core Video, Accelerate/vImage, and Metal, as the product requires.
  • Implement the mobile-to-backend communication layer — secure, low-latency, resilient to intermittent connectivity, and suitable for the transfer of large imaging and 3D data payloads.
  • Implement navigation, state management, dependency injection, persistence, offline handling, and synchronisation with backend systems within the established app architecture.

Performance, Quality & Release

  • Optimise memory usage, threading, GPU utilisation, thermal and battery behaviour, and runtime performance for demanding imaging and 3D workloads across a range of device capabilities.
  • Profile and tune with Instruments, the Metal debugger, GPU frame capture, and related tooling to eliminate stalls, hitches, and excess allocations in the capture-to-render path.
  • Work within the release pipeline: CI/CD, code signing, beta distribution (TestFlight), phased rollouts, and App Store submissions.
  • Write thorough tests (unit, integration, UI) and participate actively in code review, crash triage, telemetry, and on-call response.
  • Address accessibility, localisation, and security requirements, including secure credential and data handling on-device (Keychain, biometric authentication).

Code Quality & Collaboration

  • Write clean, well-documented, testable code and hold a high bar for correctness and maintainability in your own work and in code review.
  • Partner closely with backend, product, and design; translate product requirements into concrete, well-scoped implementation work with realistic estimates.
  • Contribute a native-iOS and GPU engineering perspective in design and code reviews, and share knowledge with peers on platform APIs, Metal, and camera-pipeline techniques.
  • Take responsibility for the quality, correctness, and performance of the code you ship to production.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. A Master's or advanced degree is welcomed but not required.
  • Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial, expert-level hands-on native iOS development.
  • Demonstrated track record of shipping high-reliability consumer or business iOS applications to the App Store, including post-launch maintenance and iteration.
  • Hands-on experience accessing and extracting raw data from camera sensors and building real-time camera or imaging pipelines on iOS.
  • Production experience with Metal (or equivalent low-level GPU programming) for imaging, computer vision, or 3D rendering workloads.
  • Experience building mobile apps that integrate meaningfully with cloud or on-premise backend systems, including secure authentication and data-transfer protocols.

Skills & Competencies

  • Expert-level proficiency in Swift and Objective-C, with fluency in modern language features, concurrency models, and idioms.
  • Deep, low-level understanding of iOS platform architecture, app lifecycle, memory management, threading models, and performance tooling.
  • Strong command of Metal — shaders, compute kernels, the render/compute pipeline, and CPU/GPU synchronisation — and of the iOS camera and imaging stack (AVFoundation, Core Image, Core Video, Accelerate).
  • Comfort with the platform build system and release tooling (Xcode, Fastlane, or similar).
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-engineering collaborators, and to communicate implementation trade-offs clearly.
  • Ability to handle confidential and pre-patent technical material with discretion, and to follow the Company's IP and data-handling policies rigorously.
  • High degree of curiosity, craftsmanship, and resilience; calm and methodical under production pressure.

Additional Preferred Experience

  • Native Android development experience (Kotlin, plus the Android camera and GPU stack — CameraX/Camera2, Vulkan/OpenGL) — a genuine plus, but not required.
  • Prior experience with mobile imaging, computer vision, camera pipelines, or 3D rendering — shipped products, research, or substantial personal projects.
  • Experience with C++ for shared performance-critical code, particularly in signal or image processing.
  • Experience in early-stage startup or innovation-lab environments, with first-of-its-kind products.
  • Contributions to open-source mobile or graphics libraries, or a public portfolio (shipped App Store apps, sample code) demonstrating native code quality.

Candidates must be eligible to work in Hungary, with fluent English knowledge, both written and oral.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position is HUF 2,000,000 – HUF 3,000,000 gross per month, paid in twelve monthly installments. The range reflects a full-time, senior individual-contributor engagement and is calibrated to the Hungarian market for expert native iOS engineers with deep Metal and camera-pipeline expertise.

The offered starting salary within this range will be determined on the basis of objective, gender-neutral criteria, including the candidate’s demonstrated depth of native iOS expertise, command of Metal and low-level GPU programming, experience extracting and processing raw camera-sensor data, track record of shipped production work, and depth of hands-on native-code contributions. Advanced degrees, specialised domain knowledge, and meaningful contributions in adjacent areas (for example, mobile imaging, computer vision, cross-platform C++, or native Android) are factors that may justify positioning toward the upper end of the range.

In addition to base salary, the total compensation package includes a discretionary performance bonus and statutory and customary benefits as applicable under Hungarian law. Details of the bonus component will be discussed with shortlisted candidates.

This salary range is disclosed in accordance with the pay transparency obligations arising from Directive (EU) 2023/970 and its transposition into Hungarian law. Candidates will not be asked about their prior or current compensation at any stage of the recruitment process.
