We are hiring Geospatial Data Scientist - Earth Observation & Satellite Data for the EU Commission in Ispra, Italy and various locations around Europe.

Main Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of tools to handle and analyze satellite imagery, including SeaDAS (SeaWiFS Data Analysis System) and SNAP (ESA’s Sentinel Application Platform);
  • Development, maintenance, and documentation of the scripts required to run a batch-mode processing of satellite data with appropriate software (relying principally on SeaDAS and SNAP modules) with particular attention to ancillary data;
  • Testing and operating this environment with past and current sensors (including Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, Landsat missions) and managing the D02 ocean color data archive;
  • Search and download satellite and environmental data through web platforms, catalogues and APIs, including WEkEO and the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (CDSE);
  • Contributing to the assessment, comparison and time analysis of satellite data series through the development of appropriate software, which might require reprojection, resampling, subsetting, mosaicking, masking and format conversion;
  • Use QGIS for spatial analysis, data visualisation, quality checks and map production;
  • Integrate satellite data with other geographical, environmental and in-situ datasets

Knowledge and skills

  • Expertise requested in Python programming language;
  • Expertise requested in Shell and Python scripting in a Linux environment;
  • Experience on the management, processing and analysis of satellite or geospatial data files (NetCDF, GeoTIFF formats);
  • Experience with APIs and Earth observation data platforms;
  • Practical experience with QGIS;
  • Expertise in machine learning or AI applied to geospatial data appreciated;
  • Experience in IDL and R programming languages appreciated;
  • Expertise on existing software dedicated to satellite data processing and analysis (like SeaDAS or SNAP) appreciated;
  • Experience in working with radiative transfer codes appreciated;
  • Experience in Earth sciences appreciated;
  • Experience in the use of IT virtual machines, dockers, cloud platforms or high-performance computing appreciated;
  • Capacity for planning and taking initiative in an IT environment applied to scientific endeavors;

Specific Expertise

Following specific software expertise is mandatory for the performance of tasks:

  • At least 3 years of specific expertise in Python programming (min. competence level 4)
  • At least 3 years of specific expertise with Linux shell (min. competence level 3)

Besides specific software languages, expertise is requested in their application to at least one of the generic fields of remote sensing, Earth sciences or radiative transfer modelling (or similar fields).

Candidate Profile

  • Capability of integration in an international/multicultural environment, rapid self-starting capability and experience in working in team;
  • Ability to participate in multilingual meetings (English);
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural environment, on multiple large projects;

Remuneration :

  • Freelancer daily rate rage: Salary : Freelance 400-430 EUR/day
  • Serco Italia Staff : 50.000-55.0000 EUR Gross/year
