This role is based in Queensland and will involve travel across exchanges, data centres, CEV, FAN, HUB, mobile and customer sites.
As our Network Engineer, you will help keep the infrastructure supporting Optus mobile and fixed services safe, available and performing at its best. You’ll provide hands-on technical support across network, power, HVAC and enhanced service platform elements, respond to critical incidents and help protect service continuity for our customers. This is a high-impact field role where strong technical judgement, safety awareness and a collaborative approach are essential.
The role will entail 24/7 shift work, on-call or recall arrangements, including out-of-hours response to critical incidents. A current driver licence and the ability to travel between infrastructure locations are required.
What You’ll Do
- Perform routine, preventative, corrective and emergency maintenance across switching, transmission, HVAC, power and enhanced service platform infrastructure.
- Provide rapid onsite response to critical incidents and support the restoration of network services within required timeframes.
- Provide first-line technical support for activities that may affect network performance or availability.
- Act as a custodian of exchange sites and support the safe operation of critical network and facility infrastructure.
- Monitor and inspect DC power systems, rectifiers, batteries, PDUs, UPS systems, generators, HVAC, fire panels, building management systems and related facility equipment.
- Identify, document and escalate issues affecting network or facility performance, working with subject matter experts, facility managers, vendors and contractors.
- Conduct equipment commissioning, site acceptance and quality audits in line with approved designs, build standards and Methods of Procedure.
- Attend exchange sites to support works, accept equipment builds and installations, and coordinate equipment delivery and deployment activities.
- Supervise onsite contractors and ensure work is completed safely, to specification and in accordance with Optus standards.
- Follow operational manuals, work instructions and field playbooks, and contribute to improving procedures and ways of working.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams including Enterprise, IP Network Engineering, Digital Networks and Network Deployment, as well as external stakeholders.
- Keep current with relevant telecommunications technologies and standards, and provide coaching and on-the-job support to new field engineer cadets.
What makes you perfect for the role?
- A technical qualification such as Certificate III, Certificate IV or Diploma in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Around five years’ experience in fixed transmission networks, with strong knowledge of network design and technologies.
- Understanding of transmission and digital systems, switching, consumer products and mobile systems, including 5G and edge technology.
