The Opportunity:
We are currently seeking a Sr. Highway Project Manager II – Design to join our Baltimore, MD office.
This role is ideal for an experienced transportation engineer who is passionate about delivering innovative roadway design solutions while leading technical teams and managing complex infrastructure projects. As a Sr. Highway Project Manager II, you will play a key role in the planning, design, and delivery of transportation projects for state, local, and federal agencies, helping improve the safety, mobility, and connectivity of the communities we serve.
Working alongside multidisciplinary teams, you will provide technical leadership, mentor engineering staff, and collaborate with clients and stakeholders throughout every phase of project delivery. What You’ll Do:
As a Sr. Highway Project Manager II – Design, you will lead the design and technical delivery of roadway and transportation projects from concept development through final design and construction support. You will oversee engineering tasks, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with MDOT, AASHTO, and client standards.
In this role, you will collaborate with project managers, engineers, clients, and regulatory agencies to develop innovative transportation solutions while providing technical guidance and quality assurance throughout the design process. You will also mentor junior staff, support project coordination across multiple disciplines, and contribute to the continued growth and success of PRIME AE's Transportation practice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design various types of roadway, sidewalk, multi-use-path, and safety projects, including urban and rural roadways, interstates, interchanges, traffic management, transportation planning, highway safety, site planning, preparation of concept alignments, geometric layout, MOT, Drainage and ADA compliance projects.
- Work with the design team comprised of Project Managers, Senior Engineers, EIT’s and other technical staff to develop engineered solutions for various clients.
- Work on design for a variety of roadway projects including interchanges, intersection improvements, roadway widening/capacity improvements, ADA, and pedestrian safety upgrades.
- Utilize CAD design software such as ORD for design and plan production.
- Perform field visits for ongoing design projects.
- Assign design tasks to less experienced designers and QA/QC their work.
- Provide in-house coordination and expertise for public projects involving roadways.
- Interface with other departments within the region to ensure efficient and organized operations of the projects.
- Interact with Federal, State and Local agencies.
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent from an accredited university.
- Active PE is required and must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.
- 6 + years’ experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience in the roadway industry.
- Bentley training and/or experience with relevant engineering software preferred, and computer literate on Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work on projects independently.
- Preliminary and Final Design Experience MDOT with projects, specifications and guidelines preferred.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience using MicroStation, Inroads, OpenRoads preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with AASHTO Policy's and Guidelines.
- Experience with site development and / or municipal projects (a plus).
- Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic design (a plus).
- Excellent communication, presentation and organizational skills.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments.
