Software Engineer II – Java Backend/Mobile APIs

As a Software Engineer II at JPMorganChase within the Commercial & Investment Bank, you are part of an agile team that works to enhance, design, and deliver the software components of the firm’s state-of-the-art technology products in a secure, stable, and scalable way. As an emerging member of a software engineering team, you execute software solutions through the design, development, and technical troubleshooting of multiple components within a technical product, application, or system, while gaining the skills and experience needed to grow within your role.

To build and support backend services and APIs powering large volume mobile applications. You will develop microservices using Java 25 and Spring Boot, deploy and operate workloads on Kubernetes, and work within AWS-based environments. This role blends feature delivery with production support, reliability, and ongoing API improvements for mobile clients.

Job responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services using Java 25 and Spring Boot.
• Build and support API integrations consumed by mobile applications (iOS/Android), focusing on performance, reliability, and backward compatibility.
• Collaborate with mobile engineers, product, QA, and platform teams to define API contracts and deliver end-to-end features.
• Containerize applications and deploy/operate them on Kubernetes, following best practices for scaling and resilience.
• Work in AWS environments (compute, networking, IAM, logging/monitoring) to support cloud-native service delivery.
• Troubleshoot production issues (logs, metrics, traces), perform root-cause analysis, and implement fixes and preventative measures.
• Document APIs (e.g., OpenAPI/Swagger), operational runbooks, and support procedures.
• Leverages enterprise-authorized AI coding assist tools within the work environment to improve code quality, delivery speed, and productivity (e.g., code generation/refactoring, unit test creation, documentation), while validating outputs through peer review, automated testing, and secure coding standards.
• Designs, develops, codes, and troubleshoots with consideration of upstream and downstream systems and technical implications
• Applies knowledge of tools within the Software Development Life Cycle toolchain, including enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to improve the value realized by automation

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

• Formal training or certification on Software Engineering concepts and 2+ years applied experience
• Professional experience building backend services with Java (including Java 25) and Spring Boot.
• Hands-on experience deploying and running services in Kubernetes (e.g., deployments, services/ingress, configmaps/secrets, probes, scaling).
• Experience developing and supporting mobile application APIs (REST/JSON), including versioning and client-impact awareness.
• Hands-on practical experience in system design, application development, testing, and operational stability
• Experience in developing, debugging, and maintaining code in a large corporate environment with one or more modern programming languages and database querying languages
• Hands-on experience using enterprise-authorized AI-assisted software development tools within the work environment (e.g., for coding, testing, troubleshooting, or documentation) with demonstrated ability to critically evaluate and validate AI-generated outputs.
• Understanding of responsible AI use in engineering workflows, including data sensitivity considerations, secure handling of inputs/outputs, and adherence to resiliency and security expectations.
• Experience across the whole Software Development Life Cycle
• Exposure to agile methodologies such as CI/CD, Application Resiliency, and Security

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

• Experience working with AWS in an engineering capacity.
• Familiarity with relational and/or NoSQL databases; writing efficient queries and designing data models.
• Understanding of secure API design (authentication/authorization, input validation, OWASP considerations).
• Ability to participate in support/on-call rotations (if applicable) and manage incidents calmly and methodically.'
