Full description
Freelance / Interim | Hybrid (Amsterdam, Netherlands) | Start: December 2026
Our client is a well-known Dutch consumer brand with a mature digital business and an ambitious data agenda. Their digital function runs on Google Cloud, with a BigQuery warehouse serving analytics, marketing activation and a growing set of machine learning use cases. You join as the data engineer for that function, taking over a platform that is already live and well-used — and taking it further.
This is a hands-on, high-ownership role. You are the technical owner of the digital data architecture, working directly with marketing, digital and analytics stakeholders rather than through layers of process. You set the standards for how data is modelled, how pipelines are built, and how models reach production.

Responsibilities
Data modelling and warehousing
- You design, build and maintain the data models that sit at the heart of the warehouse, using BigQuery and dbt.
- You keep the modelling layer clean, documented and scalable as new sources and use cases arrive.
Platform and pipelines
- You own and evolve the data engineering architecture on Google Cloud Platform.
- You build and optimise ingestion and transformation pipelines, including orchestration and CI/CD.
- You keep the platform reliable, observable and cost-efficient.
Digital and marketing data
- You integrate and model digital analytics data — Google Analytics 4, tag management, campaign and customer data — so it is usable for reporting and activation.
- You work directly with marketing and digital teams to turn their questions into dependable data products.
Machine learning enablement
- You support the deployment and operation of machine learning models, handling the engineering side of getting models into production and keeping them there.
Technical leadership
- You set engineering standards and bring others along, offering guidance and mentorship to colleagues working alongside you.
Job requirements
- Substantial commercial experience as a data engineer, with a track record of owning a production data platform rather than contributing to one.
- Deep hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform, and BigQuery in particular.
- Strong data modelling skills with dbt.
- Confident with Python and advanced SQL.
- Experience with workflow orchestration (Airflow, Cloud Composer or equivalent) and modern engineering practice — version control, CI/CD, infrastructure as code.
- Practical experience working with digital analytics data, particularly Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager.
- Able to work independently with business stakeholders and translate commercial questions into technical solutions.
- Eligible to work in the EU and able to contract on a freelance basis.
The following are a plus:
- Experience deploying and operating machine learning models in production (MLOps).
- Background in retail, e-commerce or another consumer-facing sector.
- Experience mentoring or leading other engineers.
- Fluency in Dutch.
Why this role
You take full technical ownership of a data platform that is already central to how the business operates, with the autonomy to shape where it goes next. The stack is modern and the work is genuinely varied — warehouse modelling one week, getting a model into production the next. It suits someone who wants to be the person the business comes to, not one engineer among twenty.
