Required Qualifications & Technical Skills Qualification • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, statistics, or IT. Recent graduates or those in the early stages of their career are welcome to apply. Cloud Platform • Basic awareness of cloud computing concepts (e.g. what cloud storage, compute, and managed services are). • Some exposure to at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure) — whether through study, personal projects, or internship experience. Programming – SQL • Able to write straightforward SQL queries: SELECT statements, filtering with WHERE, basic joins, and simple aggregations (GROUP BY, COUNT, SUM). • Understands what a relational database is and how tables relate to one another. • Beginning to learn how to read and interpret query results. Programming – Python • Comfortable with Python fundamentals: variables, data types, loops, conditionals, functions, and basic exception handling. • Able to write simple scripts to automate tasks or manipulate data. • Exposure to common data libraries (e.g. pandas) is a plus. Pipelines • Awareness of what data pipelines are and why they exist — understands the concept of moving and transforming data between systems. • Some familiarity with ETL concepts, even if only through study or coursework. • No expectation of hands-on pipeline production experience, but curiosity and eagerness to learn are essential. Databases • Basic understanding of relational databases: tables, rows, columns, primary keys, and foreign keys. • Awareness of what ACID properties mean at a conceptual level. • Exposure to at least one database technology (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL) through coursework or projects. Big Data • Conceptual awareness of big data and why it presents unique challenges. • No hands-on experience required, but an interest in learning technologies like Spark or distributed databases (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift) is expected. Software Development • Familiar with Git basics: cloning repositories, committing changes, and working with branches. • Understands what a pull request is and has participated in or observed code reviews. • Aware of basic software development practices: testing, version control, and documentation. Desirable Skills • NoSQL Databases: Conceptual awareness of non-relational databases. • Data Warehousing: Basic awareness of what a data warehouse is and how it differs from a transactional database. • Scripting: Any experience with Bash or shell scripting is a bonus. Non-Technical Skills Ownership Should be able to take responsibility for assigned tasks and see them through to completion. Should be able to ask for help when unclear rather than guessing. Should be able to communicate proactively if a task is taking longer than expected. Should demonstrate an awareness of where they are in their career — acknowledging their limitations and being open to guidance rather than overreaching. Communication Should be able to communicate clearly in 1:1s and team meetings. Should be able to provide regular status updates without needing to be prompted. Should be able to ask well-formed questions when requirements are unclear. Should be able to receive feedback openly and treat it as a learning opportunity rather than criticism. Momentum Should be able to complete tasks consistently and flag blockers promptly. Should be able to recognise when they have been stuck for too long and seek help rather than stalling. Should demonstrate a positive, can-do attitude that contributes to team energy. Business Context Should be able to demonstrate curiosity about how their individual tasks connect to the broader product or feature they are supporting. Should be able to ask questions about what the data they work with is used for and who it serves. Continuous Learning Should be actively building foundational skills — both technical and professional. Should be able to seek and act on feedback from mentors and peers. Should demonstrate enthusiasm for the field and a willingness to learn about the tools, technologies, and systems they work with day to day. Attitude Should demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for learning and a clear understanding that at this stage of their career, being coachable matters more than being capable. Should be able to take direction from seniors without ego, ask questions without hesitation, and treat every task — however small — as an opportunity to develop. We are looking for someone who is hungry to grow, takes pride in their work even when the scope is limited, and shows up with a positive and professional attitude that makes them a pleasure to invest in.
