Security Data Analyst

We’re looking for a Security Intelligence Analyst to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis, based at NSS North Melbourne Depot.

The Security Intelligence Analyst supports Metro’s security objectives by analysing and interpreting security, safety, operational, and intelligence information across the rail network.

Embedded within Security Operations, the role develops structured intelligence products, operational risk insights and analytical assessments that support decision-making, assurance, escalation and deployment planning. Through the analysis of multiple information sources, the role identifies trends, recurring behaviours, vulnerabilities, emerging risks, and the effectiveness of operational responses.

Reporting to the Security Intelligence Lead, the Analyst contributes to intelligence-led operations, executive reporting, operational assurance, and continuous improvement activities. The role provides analytical support that enables informed assessments, operational responses and deployment considerations.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyse security, safety, operational, and intelligence information to identify emerging risks, recurring behaviours, trends, hotspots, and operational vulnerabilities across the rail network.

• Conduct temporal, behavioural, spatial, and trend analysis to support intelligence-led operational responses and deployment considerations.

• Identify escalation indicators, repeat behaviours and operational impacts requiring further assessment or intervention.

• Integrate information from multiple operational and intelligence sources, including incident management systems, operational reporting, CCTV observations, deployment activity, and external agency information.

• Reconcile fragmented, inconsistent or incomplete information to support accurate intelligence interpretation.

• Support the preparation of structured intelligence assessments, including confidence levels, assumptions, limitations, and information gaps.

• Apply critical thinking techniques to challenge assumptions, test alternative explanations, and reduce analytical bias.

• Support operational assurance activities through analysis of incident trends, operational outcomes, and intervention effectiveness.

• Prepare intelligence summaries, operational risk insights, and analytical reporting inputs for operational and executive stakeholders.

• Translate complex operational and intelligence information into concise, structured, and decision-focused outputs.

• Conduct data quality reviews, validation, and reconciliation activities across intelligence, incident, and operational data sources to maintain the integrity, accuracy, and reliability of intelligence products.

• Investigate data anomalies, classification issues, duplicate records and information gaps, and coordinate appropriate actions with operational stakeholders.

• Develop, maintain and continuously improve intelligence datasets, registers, reporting logic, Power BI solutions, Power Apps and other analytical tools that support Security Operations.

• Support automation, workflow improvement and digital solutions that enhance intelligence collection, reporting, assurance and operational decision-making.

• Maintain appropriate standards of confidentiality, information handling, analytical caveating and intelligence governance.

• Work closely with Security Operations teams, NSS, SOC, Authorised Officers, Station Operations, Metrol, and other operational stakeholders to support intelligence development and information flow.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential

• Tertiary qualification in Safety/Security, Computer Science or Information Systems (mandatory)

• Demonstrated analytical capability within an operational, intelligence, security, assurance or risk-related environment.

• Experience analysing complex or fragmented information to identify patterns, trends, risks, or operational concerns.

• Experience using Power BI or equivalent visualisation and reporting tools to support intelligence analysis and operational reporting.

• Ability to develop and adapt analytical logic to support reporting and intelligence outputs.

• Strong written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex analysis into clear, concise intelligence reports, summaries, and stakeholder-ready insights.

• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse information, validate data integrity, and identify meaningful insights.

• Ability to communicate analytical findings clearly and concisely to operational and senior stakeholders, with a high level of attention to detail and information accuracy.

• Sound judgement and discretion when handling sensitive operational or intelligence information.

Desirable

• Experience within transport, public safety, emergency management, law enforcement, or security operations environments.

• Exposure to operational intelligence, threat assessment, assurance or escalation-based environments.

• Experience working with multiple operational and intelligence information sources.

• Understanding of operational risk, intervention strategies or control-effectiveness concepts.

• Familiarity with Victoria’s transport safety or public security environment.

• Experience in data modelling (SQL, R, or Python)

• Exposure to AI-assisted analytical techniques or intelligence-support tools.
