Job Summary: As the AI Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of automation and AI engineers responsible for designing, building, and scaling intelligent automation solutions across the organization. You will be accountable for the team's technical direction, delivery quality, and growth, while partnering with business and technology leadership to align automation and AI initiatives with organizational strategy. This role blends people leadership, technical oversight, and strategic planning to mature the company's automation and AI capabilities.
Essential Functions / Duties / Responsibilities: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of AI/automation engineers, including hiring, performance management, career development, and day-to-day coaching; set technical direction and standards for automation and AI development, including architecture patterns, tooling choices, and integration of LLM/AI capabilities into automation workflows; personally write, review, and ship production code on a regular basis (this is a hands-on technical role, not a pure people-management position); serve as the team's tech lead, making hands-on architecture and implementation decisions and pairing with engineers on complex or critical work; own the team's project portfolio, prioritizing initiatives, allocating resources, and ensuring on-time, high-quality delivery of automation solutions; partner with business stakeholders and senior leadership to identify automation opportunities, build the roadmap, and communicate progress and ROI; review and guide solution architecture and code for complex automation and AI projects, ensuring scalability, security, and maintainability; establish and enforce best practices for development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and governance of automation and AI systems; oversee incident management and escalation processes for production automation issues, ensuring timely resolution and root-cause analysis; evaluate emerging automation and AI technologies (RPA platforms, LLM providers, orchestration frameworks, agentic tooling) and make recommendations on adoption; manage vendor and tool relationships (e.g., UiPath, Power Automate, AI platform providers), including licensing, contracts, and platform strategy; drive cross-functional collaboration with IT, data, security, and compliance teams to ensure automation and AI initiatives meet organizational policies and standards; create and maintain documentation standards, architecture guidelines, and knowledge-sharing practices across the team.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent work experience; 6+ years of experience in automation engineering, software engineering, or AI/ML development, including hands-on work with RPA platforms (UiPath, Power Automate, Automation Anywhere, or similar); demonstrated experience integrating AI/LLM technologies (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure AI, or similar) into production systems; strong hands-on proficiency in Python (or similar) with a track record of shipping production code.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and grow technical teams in a fast-paced, evolving environment; strong understanding of AI/ML fundamentals, LLM orchestration, agentic workflows, and modern automation architecture; experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and their AI/automation service offerings; strong business acumen with the ability to translate business needs into technical roadmaps and communicate value to executive stakeholders; excellent project and resource management skills, with experience balancing multiple concurrent initiatives; strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills; advanced proficiency in Excel and data analysis, with familiarity with SQL and reporting tools; excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to leadership; ability to build consensus and influence across teams without direct authority; commitment to continuous learning and staying current on emerging automation and AI trends.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience building or scaling an automation/AI Center of Excellence; familiarity with process mining, automation governance frameworks, or AI risk/compliance considerations; experience managing budgets, vendor contracts, or platform licensing; relevant certifications (UiPath, Microsoft Power Platform, PMP, AI/ML certifications).
