JOB TITLE: Technical Writer DEPARTMENT: Quality Assurance REPORTS TO: Director of Quality Assurance CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

Primary Function

The Technical Writer plays a critical role in ensuring clear, accurate, and concise documentation across multiple departments, including Engineering, Program Management, Operations, and Production. This role involves gathering, analyzing, and translating complex technical information into user-friendly materials that meet Platform Aerospace and industry standards.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create, review, and maintain technical documentation, including user manuals, specifications, reports, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and related materials.
  • Translate complex engineering and technical concepts into clear, concise, and understandable documentation for a variety of audiences.
  • Apply effective communication and interviewing skills to collect information from internal and external stakeholders to support documentation efforts.
  • Conduct research as needed to gain a deeper understanding of technical, operational, or proposal-related subject matter.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subject matter experts to develop technical specifications, SOPs, installation manuals, operating manuals, and product documentation.
  • Develop and maintain a documentation repository and content directory, ensuring proper version control, accessibility, and document accuracy.
  • Ensure all written materials are grammatically correct, technically accurate, and maintain a consistent style and tone.
  • Identify and implement best practices to improve documentation processes, usability, and efficiency.
  • Solicit and incorporate stakeholder feedback to continually improve documentation quality.
  • Support audits, quality initiatives, and documentation reviews as required.
  • Perform other duties as necessary and/or required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Technical Writing, Writing & Rhetoric, STEM, or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of technical writing experience, or 6 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Excellent written, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills. Writing samples may be requested during the selection process.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
  • Ability and willingness to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Basic understanding of engineering, quality assurance, and project management concepts.
  • Ability to develop vector graphics, diagrams, and illustrations to support technical instructions.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable content for diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including Illustrator and InDesign.
  • Experience developing documentation in aerospace, defense, manufacturing, or engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with document control and quality management systems.
  • Experience supporting AS9100 or other regulated quality environments.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while developing, reviewing, and editing technical documentation.
  • Ability to traverse office, manufacturing, and operational facilities as needed to gather information and support documentation activities.
