WHAT YOU WILL DO

As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for the efficient design of company products in compliance with all applicable codes, specifications, and industry practices. You will play a key role in guiding junior staff, collaborating across departments, and ensuring high-quality, cost-effective engineering solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage day-to-day engineering department workflow and scheduling.
  • Monitor engineering workloads and assign resources to meet project deadlines and business priorities.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to engineering staff on complex or non-standard building projects.
  • Conduct secondary design reviews of complex projects to ensure compliance with contract documents, loading requirements, company standards, and applicable codes.
  • Review engineering design output and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Support quality assurance initiatives through periodic audits, reviews, and process evaluations.
  • Review and maintain engineering quality documentation and support compliance with A660 and ISO procedures.
  • Assist in evaluating and implementing software enhancements, automation tools, and improved engineering workflows.
  • Work collaboratively with Manufacturing, Drafting, Purchasing, and Sales teams to improve product design, constructability, manufacturability, and project execution.
  • Support resolution of design-related production, shop, and field issues in a timely manner.
  • Assist with engineering manpower planning, recruitment, onboarding, and performance development of staff.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback.
  • Establish and maintain engineering compensation structure that includes responsibilities, skill level and salary bands that align with published standards and market conditions.
  • Provide mentorship and technical development support to Engineers, EITs, and co-op students.
  • Support and participate in internal training initiatives and technical development programs.
  • Assist in maintaining current engineering software, design standards, and technical reference documentation.
  • Participate in technical committees, industry associations, and code development activities where appropriate.
  • Support quoting, estimating, and project coordination activities when required.
  • Prepare reports, metrics, and updates related to engineering performance, quality, and scheduling activities.
  • Maintain professional engineering practices in accordance with applicable licensing and ethical requirements.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Education & Experience:

  • Civil Engineering Degree from an accredited university.
  • Licensed in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and/or other Canadian provinces.
  • 5-8 years of experience in management or supervisory role.
  • Other management experience related to construction or buildings will be considered.
  • 10+ years of experience in steel/metal building system design.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles related to structural steel and light gauge steel design.
  • Experience leading a team of 5-10 Engineers.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strategic Planning and Business Management practical knowledge.
  • Highly effective communication skills, both spoken and written, are paramount.
  • Knowledge of building codes, design codes, and industry standards.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, limitations, and fabrication methods.
  • Proficiency with in-house and commercial design software (MBS strongly preferred).
  • Experience with software’s such as Bluebeam, Epicor, Tekla, MBS.
  • Working knowledge of 3D design software (e.g., ADA, RISA, STAAD) and FEA connection design software (e.g., Idea StatiCa).
  • Ability to review and verify computer-generated designs.
  • Have basic finance skills (understanding of revenue, expenses, income, margins, budgets, etc.)
  • Ability to empower, influence and work cohesively within a diverse team.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, minimize risk utilizing time management skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to liaise across departments.
