Job Description

What you’ll be doing

  • Own engineering execution for Machines4U, from product development and platform reliability to engineering practices and delivery cadence
  • Translate business priorities set by senior leadership into a clear, sequenced engineering roadmap and deliver against it
  • Lead a high-performing, distributed engineering team, and hold the behavioural and technical bar
  • Partner closely with product and carsales engineering counterparts to shape the Machines4U technology landscape and ensure engineering decisions serve commercial outcomes
  • Lead the progressive modernisation of Machines4U’s technology stack, balancing legacy platform stability with migration to scalable, secure and group-aligned modern systems.
  • Oversee key platform integrations and third-party technical dependencies, ensuring reliable interfaces across marketplace, CRM, payments, marketing, reporting and group systems.
  • Own engineering input into security, reliability and compliance practices, ensuring risks are understood, prioritised and remediated pragmatically.
  • Actively contribute to engineering practices, tooling, and culture across the carsales Engineering community
  • Provide clear, credible engineering perspectives to senior leadership, including assessments of risk, trade-offs, and capacity

Qualifications

What we're looking for

  • Proven experience leading engineering teams in a product-led, commercially-driven environment, ideally in a marketplace or B2B SaaS context
  • Strong technical depth across modern web stacks (backend and frontend), cloud infrastructure, and API design
  • Track record delivering practical engineering roadmaps that move the needle on business outcomes
  • Experience operating in a mixed legacy and modern technology environment, with a pragmatic approach to modernisation and risk reduction.
  • Natural relationship builder who can work effectively across functions, holding your own with stakeholders while staying accountable to a broader group
  • Credible operating range: from coding standards and incident response to roadmap trade-offs and senior leadership updates
  • Hands-on enough to review architecture, unblock engineers, and spot quality problems early
  • Pragmatic experience balancing delivery pace and meeting standards for security, reliability, and scalability
