Job Overview
iTakeControl is a clinical trial platform supporting live studies within a validated, GxP-compliant environment. We are bringing the platform fully in-house and building the team that will own and grow it.
We are looking for a strong Frontend Developer to own and advance the platform’s web interfaces as a hands-on, code-first contributor. The platform spans several substantial frontends — an operator-facing administration portal, a participant-facing web experience, and a registration experience — built on a modern React stack with a shared component library. Working under the technical direction of the Technical Lead, you will write production-quality frontend code, maintain a high bar for usability and accessibility, and help keep a live regulated platform stable, performant, and reliable.
The role begins by building a deep working understanding of the existing interfaces during the handover from the outgoing vendor, then moves into ongoing feature development, refactoring, and UI quality work within the established compliance framework. It is a delivery-focused role for an experienced frontend engineer who takes ownership of their work and cares about the details — performance, accessibility, and visual consistency — on a platform where clarity and correctness carry regulatory weight.
The nature of this role: this is a frontend software-engineering position. The day-to-day work is designing and maintaining large, stateful single-page applications — application architecture, complex client-side state, data-heavy interactive interfaces, performance tuning, and automated testing. It goes well beyond HTML/CSS markup, templating, or responsive styling: we are looking for someone who reasons about and structures frontend application code, not only its presentation layer. Strong HTML5/CSS3 and responsive skills are expected, but they are the floor, not the role.
The role works with US-based stakeholders and requires regular overlap with US hours, particularly around releases.
What You’ll Own
- Hands-on frontend delivery — building and maintaining features across the platform’s React web applications to a production-quality standard
- Component library and design consistency — contributing to and maintaining a shared component library so UI patterns stay consistent across applications
- UI quality — responsive layout, accessibility, cross-browser correctness, performance, and visual consistency
- Frontend stability and performance — troubleshooting production UI issues, optimising rendering and bundle size, and contributing to the long-term technical health of the frontend
- Compliance-aware development — building interfaces within the validated environment, preserving the clarity, auditability, and data-integrity expectations the platform requires
- Codebase fluency — building a deep working understanding of the existing interfaces during the vendor handover and keeping documentation current for the areas you own
- Collaboration — participating in code reviews and design discussions, working closely with backend engineers on API contracts, and partnering with QA on frontend test coverage
What We’re Looking For
This is a hands-on engineering role. We are looking for proven, production frontend capability across the areas below — what you can do matters more than titles held.
Core Engineering Skills (must-have)
- React application engineering — strong, current, hands-on experience designing and building large single-page applications in React (we run a current React version). You understand how React actually renders and re-renders, design components that stay composable and performant as the application grows, and make sound architectural decisions rather than only wiring components together
- State management at scale — designing predictable, maintainable application state for a large, multi-feature app (we use Redux Toolkit): normalised data, derived state, and async/server-data lifecycles — and the judgement to avoid the state bugs that surface at scale
- TypeScript and modern JavaScript — strong asynchronous JavaScript and applied TypeScript (typing components, props, state, and API contracts); expert-level HTML5 and CSS3 with responsive and adaptive layout as a baseline
- Frontend performance — profiling real applications and fixing what you find: unnecessary re-renders, slow rendering of large data sets, oversized bundles, and load-time problems
- Complex, data-heavy UI — hands-on with enterprise data grids (e.g. ag-Grid, MUI X DataGrid): server-side/infinite row models, virtualised rendering, custom cell renderers and editors, and column sorting, filtering, grouping, and aggregation. Comfortable building interactive dashboards and charts (e.g. ECharts), configurable/draggable layouts, and schema- or rule-driven multi-step forms with conditional fields and client-side validation — always handling loading, error, empty, and edge states correctly
- Application structure and maintainability — client-side routing in a large app, clear module/feature boundaries, separation of concerns, and keeping a large codebase coherent over time
- Component-driven development — designing reusable, composable, accessible components and working within a theming/design-system approach (we use MUI). Documenting and visually testing components in a tool like Storybook, and maintaining a shared component library versioned across multiple applications
- Accessibility and cross-browser quality — building accessible (WCAG-aware) interfaces that behave correctly across browsers, devices, and screen sizes
- Automated frontend testing — writing component/unit tests that assert behaviour rather than implementation detail, plus end-to-end and visual-regression coverage, and shipping features together with their tests
- Modern build tooling — working fluently with module systems, bundlers, and frontend build pipelines
- API integration — consuming RESTful and/or real-time APIs, modelling client-side data, and collaborating with backend engineers on contracts
- Version control and collaboration — strong Git workflows and a habit of writing reviewable, well-documented code
Delivery and Quality Mindset
- Writes production-quality frontend code daily and takes ownership of it through to production
- Cares about the user experience: performance, accessibility, and visual polish
- Plans realistically and keeps the team informed on progress, risks, and trade-offs
- Brings sound engineering judgement to a live, regulated platform, valuing well-tested, reliable changes
- Collaborates well with backend, QA, design, and product, and is willing to support and mentor less experienced team members
Preferred Qualifications
- Component library / design system tooling — experience building and documenting components in a tool such as Storybook
- Visual regression and e2e testing — experience with frameworks such as Playwright or equivalent
- Internationalisation — experience building multi-language interfaces (i18n)
- Video / real-time UI — experience integrating video calling, WebRTC, or other real-time features into a web frontend
- Server-side React frameworks — experience with Next.js or similar
- Offline-capable web apps — experience with client-side storage, resumable uploads, or offline-first patterns
- Regulated or healthcare environment — experience working within HIPAA, GxP, FDA 21 CFR Part 11, or equivalent frameworks
- Vendor takeover / legacy stabilisation — experience joining an existing system from an external vendor or stabilising a legacy frontend
- AI-assisted development — practical, transparent use of AI tooling to improve delivery
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
- 6+ years of hands-on frontend development, with strong, current, production React experience building single-page applications (not primarily markup, templating, or static/content-driven UI)
- Proven track record of independently delivering production frontend features end to end, including their state management and test coverage
- Experience maintaining a large, stateful, established frontend application
- Experience operating in a live, customer-facing production system where UI defects have real consequences
- Experience working within regulated or validated software environments preferred
- Experience in Life Sciences, Clinical Trials, Healthcare IT, or Medical Devices a plus
