About the team and the role:
Welcome to the Product Knowledge organization at eBay, where we sit at the intersection of AI, data science, and seller empowerment. Our team is the core architect behind the structured data, taxonomies, and intelligent tools that power global commerce for millions of users. We operate with a high-agency, startup-like, and high-trust culture that values bold ideas, authenticity, and a healthy work-life balance. As the Data Science Manager for Knowledge Management, you will lead high-visibility analytical initiatives to shape how products are priced, cataloged, and listed. Depending on your team placement, you will develop deep insights and assess models. You will create proof-of-concept (PoC) solutions for critical areas including AI-based Price Mentorship and image-to-text Magical Experiences. These solutions greatly reduce listing times for sellers. Reporting within our Product Knowledge division, you will bridge the gap between advanced models (LLMs/VLMs) and scalable seller workflows.
What you will accomplish:
- Drive Core Seller Initiatives: Deliver deep analytical insights and create proof-of-concept (PoC) models throughout the product lifecycle to back features like Machine Learning based Price Guidance and AI listing tooling.
- Evaluate Sophisticated GenAI Workflows: Design robust benchmarking and evaluation frameworks to measure the accuracy and performance of Large Language Models (LLMs)
- Power "Magical" Listing Experiences: Optimize innovative VLM workflows that extract structured catalog attributes directly from seller images, significantly reducing friction and time-to-list.
- Shape Taxonomy & Discovery Strategy: Conduct deep data dives using SQL and Python to refine eBay's search algorithms, catalog infrastructure, and global ontologies for a highly intuitive browsing experience.
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Applied ML teams to translate prototype data insights into scalable, production-grade features that support seller success.
- Establish Trustworthy Performance Metrics: Build out scalable validation metrics and test beds to verify model safety, performance, and financial mentorship consistency before marketplace deployment.
What you will bring:
- Professional Experience: 9+ years of experience in analytics, data science, or machine learning roles with a proven track record of handling high ownership and product ambiguity.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced expertise in SQL and Python for processing data, running statistical experiments, and performing automated data analysis.
- Modern AI Familiarity: Hands-on exposure to or conceptual understanding of evaluating generative AI workflows, specifically including LLMs, prompt engineering, or Vision-Language Models (VLMs).
- Domain Context: Experience or interest in digital marketplace mechanics, such as seller listing flows, search/recommendation algorithms, pricing intelligence, or catalog ontologies.
- Analytical Framework Design: Strong capability in designing custom benchmarking methodologies and evaluation metrics to grade complex machine learning model outputs.
- Location & Collaboration: Based out of our Bengaluru, India office, with the excellent communication skills required to seamlessly influence and collaborate with cross-functional global stakeholders.
