Purpose of the role
To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.
Accountabilities
- Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
- Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
- Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
- Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
- Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
- Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

Join us as a Senior DevOps Engineer, at Barclays where you will spearhead a strategic engineering and platform delivery team supporting business process automation, digital workflow enablement, and integration-led transformation across Functions. You will partner with solution architects, developers, quality engineers, security teams, platform teams, and business stakeholders to deliver robust, automated, and controlled engineering solutions across cloud platforms, SaaS products, and enterprise systems.
To be successful as a Senior DevOps Engineer , you should have experience with:
- Delivering hands-on DevOps engineering outcomes across CI/CD pipeline design, release automation, deployment governance, environment management, and operational support.
- Designing, building, and maintaining automated build, test, deployment, and release pipelines using platforms such as GitLab CI/CD or equivalent enterprise tooling.
- Applying strong source control and release management practices, including branching strategies, merge request governance, release tagging, artifact management, deployment traceability, and audit evidence.
- Supporting applications and services deployed across cloud platforms, container platforms, SaaS products, and internal enterprise systems within a controlled and service-focused technology environment.
- Using infrastructure automation, configuration management, scripting, and repeatable deployment practices through technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, shell scripting, Python, or equivalent tools.
- Working with Linux/Unix platforms, application runtime environments, networking fundamentals, certificates, secrets management, identity and access controls, and operational troubleshooting.
- Embedding quality, security, risk, and control requirements into delivery pipelines, including automated testing, vulnerability scanning, code quality checks, controlled deployment approvals, segregation of duties, and audit-ready evidence.
- Supporting distributed systems and business-critical services with a focus on service performance, scalability, reliability, monitoring, alerting, incident response, root cause analysis, operational resilience, and continuous service improvement.
Some other highly valued skills may include:
- Strong DevOps experience across CI/CD pipeline engineering, automated build and deployment workflows, release orchestration, deployment governance, environment promotion, rollback planning, and production readiness.
- Hands-on experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Helm, container registries, service deployment patterns, scaling, resilience, and platform troubleshooting.
- Experience implementing observability and operational tooling, including monitoring dashboards, log aggregation, metrics, alerts, distributed tracing, SLO/SLI reporting, incident triage, runbooks, and service health management.
- Ability to manage DevOps risks and delivery dependencies, including deployment blockers, pipeline failures, release conflicts, infrastructure constraints, security findings, and timely escalation to platform, vendor, risk, or management teams.
- Strong troubleshooting capability across DevOps toolchains, CI/CD pipelines, application deployments, APIs, integrations, infrastructure services, network connectivity, certificates, secrets, access controls, and runtime platforms.
- Experience working in Agile and DevSecOps delivery models, collaborating with engineering, QA, security, operations, risk, and control teams to embed automation, quality gates, vulnerability management, and controlled release practices.
- Excellent documentation and communication skills, with the ability to produce deployment guides, pipeline documentation, operational runbooks, release plans, support handover materials, control evidence, and service readiness artefacts.
- You may be assessed on critical skills relevant for success in the role, including DevOps engineering, CI/CD automation, cloud and container platforms, release management, observability, incident management, risk and controls, change and transformation, digital technology, and role-specific technical skills.
